[CTRL] Fw: Radioactive Waste Seeps Toward Columbia River
-Caveat Lector- - Original Message - To: "*OBRL_News" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, April 14, 2001 3:28 PM Please copy and distribute to other interested individuals and groups ** Of interest for those of us living and working in the Pacific NW. + From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Sun, 31 Dec 2000 22:56:11 EST Subject: Radioactive Waste Seeps Toward Columbia River Radioactive Waste Seeps Toward Columbia River KIM MURPHY, Times Staff Writer RICHLAND, Wash.--For five years during the 1960s, researchers at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation took spent fuel from the plant's bomb-making reactors and conducted a series of radiochemistry experiments. Once the work was finished, the fuel--so radioactive it couldn't be handled except by remote control--was buried in three underground trenches. And there it remained, largely forgotten. Until last year, when routine surveys found tritium--known to cause birth defects--at concentrations 90 times the federal drinking water standard in a nearby well. By last month, the level of tritium in the ground water had increased fourfold. The well lies 3 1/2 miles from the Columbia River, the greatest river of the American West, the waterway that irrigates 1 million acres of prime farmland in two states and nurtures 80% of the fall chinook salmon harvested in Alaska and British Columbia. ests of other wells have shown that the potent tritium seep hasn't moved more than a quarter-mile from the burial site. Still, Hanford officials say that the contamination could reach the river in as little as three years. What's more disturbing is what may follow. Tritium is one of the fastest-moving radionuclides and may merely be the scout. Far more deadly nuclear wastes likely are not far behind. Nowhere has the Cold War's legacy lingered so poisonously as it has at the 560-square-mile Hanford reservation, operated by the federal government for more than 40 years to produce plutonium for nuclear bombs. It is the most contaminated place in North America, with 80% of the spent nuclear fuel in the Department of Energy's inventory--2,100 metric tons in all--stored in a pair of aging basins, some of their fuel canisters crumbling and corroded. Deteriorating underground tanks a few miles away hold 54 million gallons of radioactive soup that over the years has made its way into the ground waterexcerpts: How far has it leaked? There is already some tritium in the Columbia River, measurable in Richland's drinking water supply--although at well below federal safety standards. Mulberry bushes measured along the Hanford shore also have shown substantial amounts of strontium-90 and thorium, in addition to other toxic contaminants such as chromium. None of it, federal officials believe, is enough to jeopardize public health. The Columbia's vast flows so far have diluted the contamination to well within federal standards. But imagine what it will be like in 10 or 20 years, say Washington state officials, who are pushing for increased cleanup efforts. Under the most optimistic scenario, the Energy Department says it can clean up 10% of Hanford's leaky tanks by 2018. The rest of the waste won't be hauled away for 40 to 50 more years. What of removing the tanks themselves? No plan. Target date for completely removing contamination around the tank farms and plutonium processing plants? Never. The magnitude of cleaning up the plants that manufactured America's atomic weapon arsenal--facilities such as the Idaho National Laboratory, the Savannah River Site in South Carolina, Rocky Flats near Denver and Hanford--only recently has begun to be understood. While the DOE expects to spend at least $186 billion over the next 70 years cleaning up 53 sites across the country, there is a growing realization that many of them will never be completely safe. In fact, there are more than 100 sites nationwide with contamination that will require long-term stewardship. At places such as Hanford and Savannah River, it means keeping some of the gates locked forever. At a number of other sites, it means setting up agreements with local governments to make sure that, maybe half a century down the road, somebody doesn't unwittingly decide to build a housing tract or dig a well atop a buried store of poison. "As the years go by, people are starting to realize that the non- cleanup cleanup is all there's going to be. The fact is that we don't know how to clean up some things," said Katherine Probst of Resources for the Future, a nonpartisan group in Washington, D.C., that studies environmental issues. ... The DOE has awarded a $6.9-billion contract to British Nuclear Fuels Ltd. to build a plant to treat the first 10% of the radioactive wastes. But scientists for the National Research Council already have expressed doubts. Retrieving the waste from the damaged tanks, they warn, could end up spilling just as

[CTRL] Fw: Stress and Microwaves (from Cell Phone Radiation)
-Caveat Lector- Orgone Biophysical Research Lab http://www.orgonelab.org Forwarded News Item Please copy and distribute to other interested individuals and groups ** http://www.feb.se FEB - The Swedish Association for the ElectroSensitive An excellent web site with lots of information and studies on dangers of cell-phone radiation. + From: "Leif Sodergren" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Dtress and Microwaves Date: Tue, 27 Mar 2001 07:38:31 - STRESS AND MICROWAVES By Leif Sodergren SWEDEN BBC World Service program Agenda recently aired a very interesting program on stress. One of the participants asked himself: Why is everyone suddenly so stressed? Is it only a fad? Prevoius generations lived under much harder conditions and lacked health care. It is a sensible reflection. Maybe we are working harder, but are we working that much harder? In the past people worked hard also, but what is new in our lives? What has dramatically changed to cause this stress? No one in your panel looked at one important environmental factor that has changed dramatically the last one or two decades. There is an important factor: the increased radiation from mobile phones, television and radio broadcasts. This pollution is invisible and often overlooked and disregarded due to industry influence. But how exactly can we attribute the stress we experience to microwaves? Professor Henry Lai one of the most eminent American researchers on microwaves, has explained that microwaves have the same stress effect on the human body as loud sound has. The invisible microwaves that we cannot see, but that pass through our bodies, is a chronic stressor. Our bodies, whether we want to or not, experience the microwaves as stress, as though we were exposed to loud noise continuously. This might explain the epedemic of "burned out" individuals. With an ongoing backround stress from microwaves and other electrosmog, we cannot carry out ordinary hard work. We have become stress sensitive and brittle. A further worrying comment from Professor Lai was that this stress, like any other stress, has an accumulative effect. In Scandinavia (we have more mobile phones than anywhere els in the world) we suffer from en epidemic of "burned out" individuals from all walks of life. People who become disfunctional due to stress and have to leave work, in the best of cases for a few month, in some cases, never to return. A new vocabulary has been invented. The government is worried about escalating social costs. But are people finally beginning to make associations between their environment and their symptoms? Yes, some are. When young people show an increase in oral cancer, there is certainly cause to pause. A professor in tumour surgery for nose and throat, Staffan Edstrm at the Sahlgrenska hospital in Gothenburg, explains (in the newspaper GP 13 december 1999) that we all live in an environment with intensified radiation from mobile phones, computers, and cars and that this gives cause to think that the environmental factor can explain this increase in oral cancer among the young. There is more worrying news: During 1994- 1996, when Swedish teenagers started using mobile phones, prescriptions for sleeping pills to young women of the ages between 15-24 years have doubled.(Radio:Dagens Eko october 4 1999). At the same time, prescriptions of anti-depresseants to the same group have increased by 40 percent. We regard ourselves as very sophisticated individuals, but biologically we are as primitive as stone age man. We have no built-in protection against environmental toxins or microwaves. One day when the party is over and we soberly look back at this period, we might wonder how entire populations allowed themselves to be continually exposed to low levels of microwaves. We might also regret having left research in the hands of the mobile phone industry. How likely were they to sponsor research that would threaten their existence? The only sensible voice is to be found in the British government. Their panel of experts recommend children under 16 not to use mobile phones unless there is an emergency. [CTRL] Flat Earth Society head Charles Johnson, dead at 76
-Caveat Lector- Sunday, March 25, 2001 Charles Johnson; Longtime Leader of Flat Earth Society "We have studied the Earth," he assured anybody who would listen, "and found it flat." That plane Earth, he insisted, is of unknown dimensions, a disc with the North Pole in the center and impenetrable Arctic ice 150 feet high all the way around. The sun and moon, each 32 miles in diameter, circle the disc at a steady height of 3,000 miles, with so-called rising or setting only an optical illusion. Charles K. Johnson, irrepressible advocate and president of the International Flat Earth Society for nearly three decades, has died. He was 76. Johnson died March 19 in Lancaster, near Hi Vista, where he had moved the iconoclastic society's headquarters in 1972 after he succeeded the late Samuel Shenton of Dover, England, in the presidency. The ever-quotable Johnson also wrote and published the entertaining if somewhat eccentric Flat Earth News, which once boasted 3,500 subscribers. His Flat Earth Society has ambiguous historical roots but is in spirit related to the Universal Zetetic (investigative) Society founded in England in 1832 by Sir Birley Rowbotham, who wrote "Earth Not a Globe." Advocates have traditionally used carefully chosen Bible passages to substantiate their assertions, supplemented by purportedly scientific observations of bodies of water. About 1888, England's Sir Walter de Sodington Blount and his wife made a series of experiments on a canal called Old Bedford Level, proving, they said, that the Earth had no curvature. Almost a century later, Johnson and his late Australian-born wife and chief adjunct, Marjory, checked the surfaces of Lake Tahoe and the Salton Sea. Like the Blounts, they couldn't see any curve either, thus reassuring themselves that the Earth is flat. Johnson was 8 and living in San Angelo, Texas, when he made his commitment to the flat Earth theory. He spun a globe in his class, concluded that what his textbook said about gravitation was absurd and gazed at a nearby lake, observing no curve. "Obviously water's flat, isn't it?" he said in a Times interview in 1992. "They're trying to tell you this water's bent!" -Caveat Lector- From: "Aleisha Saba" [EMAIL PROTECTED] No wonder that guy gave up West Point to the English during the American Revolution... West Point was never given up to the English. Benedict Arnold supposedly conspired with John Andre to do so, but Andre (or his double) was captured with incriminating documents before the supposed plan could be carried out. History has presented us with the story that Arnold was nothing but a money-grubbing 'traitor', and that Andre was nothing but an effete opportunist...but when one delves into the FACTS regarding both men, one finds both were much more complex than the caricatures we've been taught in school...and that there are hints that there was much more going on to Arnold's supposed 'treachery' than the public -- then as now -- has been led to believe... [CTRL] Serial killer Henry Lee Lucas, dead at 64
-Caveat Lector- http://www.latimes.com/obituary/20010313/tCB00V2866.html Tuesday, March 13, 2001 Convicted Texas Murderer Dies HUNTSVILLE, Texas--Henry Lee Lucas, the convicted killer who 18 years ago made and then recanted confessions to hundreds of unsolved murder cases, has died in prison. Lucas, who claimed he made fake confessions to make police "look stupid," was found dead in his bed Monday night at the Ellis I prison unit where he was serving sentences for nine murders, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said. He was 64. The one-eyed ex-drifter was narrowly saved from execution three years ago when then-Gov. George W. Bush commuted a death sentence to life in prison because of flimsy evidence in his capital case. After the commutation, Lucas had predicted an "80 percent chance" he would walk free someday. Lucas had recently complained of breathing problems and spent a night or two in a prison hospital a few months ago, said Larry Todd, a prison system spokesman. Todd would not be more specific on the cause of death, although Lucas also had a history of heart problems. There was no immediate word if any relatives might claim his remains. If Lucas' body is not claimed, the state will bury him in an inmates cemetery in Huntsville. Bush in 1998 commuted Lucas' death sentence of Lucas four days before the death row inmate was scheduled for lethal injection in the 1979 slaying in Williamson County of an unidentified woman known only as "Orange Socks." The victim was so named because the socks were all she was wearing when her body was found in 1979 in a ditch off Interstate 35 near Georgetown, north of Austin. Lucas was arrested in June 1983 for the slaying of a 75 -year-old Montague County woman. During a court proceeding there shortly after his arrest, he confessed to the murders of hundreds of women. Lucas' highly publicized confession spree prompted authorities to clear their books of more than 600 unsolved killings. He later recanted but many of those murder cases were never reopened. In recent years, Lucas insisted he committed just one murder, killing his mother in Michigan in 1960 -a crime for which he served time in prison and a Michigan mental hospital. Besides the life term for the Orange Socks killing, Lucas had six other life sentences and 210 years in prison for three other slayings. In 1999, he told reporters he had become fascinated by Rafael Resendez-Ramirez, who has been connected to at least eight slayings in Texas, Kentucky and Illinois. "If this was 1983, I'd claim these murders, too," Lucas told the Houston Chronicle at the time. "I made the police look stupid. I was out to wreck Texas law enforcement." Another prison spokesman, Larry Fitzgerald, said Lucas had spent most of his time in state custody since 1985 as a sewing machine operator, working in a prison garment factory that produces guard uniforms. "He was our best," Fitzgerald said. -- A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/"www.ctrl.org/A DECLARATION DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion informational exchange list. [CTRL] Mort the Mouth: Morton Downey, Jr., dead at 67
-Caveat Lector- http://www.latimes.com/obituary/20010313/tCB00V2890.html Tuesday, March 13, 2001 Lung Cancer Kills Morton Downey Jr. LOS ANGELES -Before Jerry Springer and Jenny Jones, there was Morton Downey Jr., a growling and opinionated TV talk show host who shocked viewers from behind a haze of cigarette smoke. America, he once told The Associated Press, saw him as "a loudmouth who gets in trouble just like they do, who's had problems just like they had, someone that they can identify with a lot more than someone who's squeaky clean." Downey, who reigned over "Trash TV" in the 1980s and tried to clean up his act for a return, died of lung cancer and other respiratory problems, his family said Monday night. He was 67. "The family is very grief stricken and very shocked right now," one of Downey's four daughters, Tracey Downey, told KABC-TV. "He was a wonderful, wonderful man, wonderful father. He will be deeply, deeply, deeply missed." A chain smoker for years until losing a lung to cancer, Downey was known for deliberately blowing smoke into the faces of guests who annoyed him when he was host of one of the most popular talk shows on television in the 1980s. After his cancer surgery in 1996, he became an anti-smoking crusader. Saying he had been "an idiot" for smoking, he taped public service announcements and told the syndicated TV show "Extra" that he hoped he could "undo some of the damage that I did during all the years that I did television." Downey was the son of popular singer Morton Downey and his dancer-wife, Barbara Bennett. He pursued a number of professions including businessman, author, radio host, singer and songwriter. But it wasn't until the 1980s that he became a household name with "The Morton Downey Jr. Show." Debuting in the New York City area in 1987, it became a hit almost immediately and was syndicated nationally the following year. In its heyday, he was known as "Mort the Mouth," the host who mocked his sometimes bizarre guests as "slime" or "scumbucket" and argued frequently with members of his studio audience, dismissing liberals in particular as "pablum pukers." One show erupted into a fist fight between civil rights advocates Al Sharpton and Roy Innis. Years later he would acknowledge that he probably carried things too far. "It got out of control because the producers ... wanted me to top myself every night," he said in the early 1990s. "If I did something outlandish on Monday night, on Tuesday night, we'd have to think of something even more outlandish. And after a while, you work yourself toward the edge of the trampoline and you fall off. I fell off a number of times and I found it very displeasing." The effort to top himself led to perhaps the biggest embarrassment of his career when he claimed neo-Nazi skinheads attacked him in a San Francisco airport restroom in April 1989, cutting off his hair and painting a swastika on his head. Authorities could never verify the attack, and Downey's critics pounced, calling it a publicity stunt. They noted he had been in San Francisco to promote his show when it happened. A few months later, the show was canceled. Five years later, Downey launched a comeback with a new show, titled simply "Downey." It met with less success, and Downey acknowledged he had toned it down. In a 1995 interview with AP, he described the show: "No meanness this time. Just as confrontational, just as tough, just as opinionated, but everyone else has the right to have their opinion and be heard." Still, that didn't stop him from claiming on one episode to have achieved psychic communication with the spirit of Nicole Brown Simpson, the murdered ex-wife of O.J. Simpson. Downey also acknowledged that he was proud of many aspects of the original show, crediting it for paving the way for shocking programs by Springer and others. "Everyone says, 'Well, Springer's doing your show now,"' Downey said in 1998. "That's not true. I didn't do sleaze. There were times that I did things that were a little sleazy, but I didn't do shows on my neighbor's collie dog having sex with my neighbor's wife." He also said the show provided a forum for working-class Americans fed up with what politicians in Washington, D.C., were doing with their tax money. "It isn't the rich people who come up and say, 'Oh, Mort, you're just great,"' Downey once said. "It's the blacks and the ethnics and the blue collars, those guys with too much hair on their shoulder blades. They want some answers." Born Sean Morton Downey Jr. on Dec. 9, 1933, the talk-show host grew up in privilege, attending military school and earning a marketing degree and a law degree. He also appeared as an actor in such TV shows and movies as "Tales from the Crypt," "Meet Wally Sparks," "Revenge of the Nerds III," "Predator II" and the new "Rockford Files." Downey said he was introduced to cigarettes at age

[CTRL] Perennial presidental candidate Harold Stassen, dead at 93
-Caveat Lector- http://www.latimes.com/obituary/20010304/tCB00V5187.html Sunday, March 4, 2001 Ex-Minnesota Gov. Stassen Dies at 93 BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -Perennial presidential candidate Harold E. Stassen, whose name became a synonym for political futility despite a distinguished career as a governor, diplomat and university president, died Sunday. He was 93. Stassen died of natural causes early Sunday at Friendship Village, a retirement community in this Minneapolis suburb where he had been living for the last few years, said his granddaughter, Rachel Stassen-Berger. Stassen, a liberal Republican, sought his party's nomination for the White House 10 times, the first in 1948 and the last in 1992. His later campaigns were regarded as little more than political curiosities, although he pushed a serious platform including global disarmament, national health care and full employment through public works projects. Though he had not won an election in half a century, Stassen bristled at being labeled a political Don Quixote. "I feel it's really been a winning life," he said in December 1991 as he filed for the 1992 New Hampshire primary. "Every one of the nine times there has been some solid result." Born April 13, 1907, on a farm near St. Paul, Stassen started his political career as a county prosecutor. His glory days began in 1938 when, at age 31, he was elected to the first of three two-year terms as governor. The 1942 election was Stassen's last successful campaign. He resigned the governorship in April 1943, four months after beginning his third term, and joined the Navy, where he served in the Pacific as assistant chief of staff to Adm. William Halsey. Stassen made his first presidential bid in 1948, traveling across the country to seek the support of GOP convention delegates. He ran on a liberal platform of federal funds for housing, limited regulation of labor, international cooperation, and adjustment of federal taxes and spending to prevent boom-or-bust swings in the economy. But he lost the nomination to Thomas E. Dewey, who in turn was defeated by President Harry Truman. After a four-year stint as president of the University of Pennsylvania, Stassen again jumped into the Republican presidential race in 1952, facing Dwight Eisenhower and conservative Ohio Sen. Robert Taft. Stassen swung the convention to Eisenhower by releasing the Minnesota delegation to him at the end of the first ballot. Stassen also ran for president in 1964, 1968, 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988 and 1992. In 1992, he won one delegate in the Minnesota primary. He later released the delegate to vote for whomever he wished, and Stassen did not get any votes at the convention. Stassen said he regarded his campaigns as a form of expression. "You have to run, to be willing to put yourself on the line before you can be really effective," he said in a 1978 interview. "You can talk or write about something and it has some meaning, but to be effective you have to lay it on the line. It's my life." Said Gov. Jesse Ventura, paying tribute to Stassen on Sunday: "As Minnesotans, we can be proud of a statesman who never gave up his fight for a better state, a better country and a peaceful world." Stassen's wife of 70 years and childhood sweetheart, Esther, died last October. They had a son and a daughter, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. -- A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/"www.ctrl.org/A DECLARATION DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion informational exchange list. [CTRL] Kent State Gov. James Rhodes, dead at 91
-Caveat Lector- http://www.latimes.com/obituary/20010304/tCB00V5136.html Sunday, March 4, 2001 Ex-Ohio Gov. James Rhodes, 91, Dies COLUMBUS, Ohio--Former Gov. James A. Rhodes, whose decision to quell an anti-war protest by sending National Guard troops to Kent State University in 1970 led to four student deaths, died Sunday. He was 91. Rhodes, the state's only four-term governor, died at 2:45 p.m. at Ohio State University Medical Center from complications from an infection and heart failure, said David Crawford, a hospital spokesman. The son of a coal miner, Rhodes rose from poverty to become Columbus mayor when he was 33. The election marked the beginning of a political career that spanned nearly 50 years. Rhodes was credited with bringing many industries to Ohio. During his administrations, the state built highways, expanded the university system and put an airport in almost every county. A college dropout, he also was credited with making Ohio a leader in vocational education. But the Kent State shootings cast an indelible shadow on his career. On May 2, 1970, he decided to send the National Guard to Kent State, which, like campuses across the nation, was in turmoil over the incursion into Cambodia during the Vietnam War. Protesters had vandalized businesses in downtown Kent and the campus ROTC building was burned. On May 4, four students died and nine were wounded when troops opened fire. The reason behind the shootings was never fully learned. Lawsuits against Rhodes and other officials ended in January 1979, when the victims' families agreed to settlements totaling $675,000. Those close to him said he was saddened by the tragedy but blamed the turbulence of the war era and believed his action was necessary. Already that year there had been three riots on Ohio campuses. "The Kent State call came from the merchants and county commissioners because of the conditions that were existing the night before," Rhodes said years later. "You see, it was a consensus." In 1999, Rhodes still believed the protesters were misguided: "It was people who thought something was wrong with America." When he ran in the GOP Senate primary on May 5, 1970 -the day after the Kent State shootings -he lost to Robert Taft Jr., the father of current Gov. Bob Taft -by 6,000 votes out of about 900,000 cast. He made a comeback in 1974, narrowly defeating Democratic Gov. John Gilligan. He served two more terms, then tried another comeback in 1986, but lost. In later years, Rhodes was an Ohio presidential campaign adviser to Ronald Reagan and the elder George Bush, who said he helped them carry the state. Rhodes' wife, Helen, died in 1987. He is survived by two daughters. -- A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/"www.ctrl.org/A DECLARATION DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion informational exchange list. [CTRL] Henry Wade of Roe vs. Wade; Ruby Prosecutor, dead at 86
-Caveat Lector- http://www.latimes.com/obituary/20010302/t18629.html Friday, March 2, 2001 Henry Wade; Named in Roe vs. Wade, Tried Jack Ruby By ELAINE WOO, Times Staff Writer Henry M. Wade, the legendary Texas prosecutor whose 36-year tenure as Dallas County district attorney placed him in the national spotlight during two historic moments--he was the Wade in the landmark abortion ruling Roe vs. Wade and he prosecuted Jack Ruby--has died. Wade died in Dallas on Thursday of complications from Parkinson's disease, according to a spokesman for his law firm, Geary, Porter Donovan. He was 86. He was a law-and-order icon in Texas who never lost a case he prosecuted. He sought the death penalty 30 times and got it 29 times. His office reported conviction rates greater than 90%. Beleaguered defense attorneys banded together in a 7 Percent Club, an acknowledgment of their unimpressive record against the formidable Wade. By his retirement in 1986, he had served longer than any other district attorney in a major U.S. city. He had plenty of critics, who said he was overzealous in his pursuit of convictions. The son of a judge, Wade was a native of Rockwall, Texas, who earned his law degree from the University of Texas School of Law in 1938. He worked four years as an FBI agent, then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He joined the Dallas County prosecutor's office in 1947 and in 1950 was elected district attorney. Declared Oswald Kennedy's Killer As chief prosecutor when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963, Wade declared Lee Harvey Oswald the killer within 10 hours of the shooting. He was criticized for being too hasty in naming Oswald as the gunman, but years later maintained his belief that Oswald acted alone. "I wouldn't have had any trouble convicting him," he said. Two days after the assassination, Ruby, a Dallas nightclub owner, gunned down Oswald at point-blank range in the basement of the Dallas police headquarters while news cameras captured the slaying live. Wade led his prosecution. The jury returned a guilty verdict in one hour and 50 minutes and sentenced Ruby to death. But the conviction was overturned in 1966 by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, which said it was wrong to have held the trial in Dallas because of the intensity of feelings there over the assassination. Ruby died of cancer in 1967 while awaiting a second trial. "No question he had some loose cells in his brain," Wade told the New York Times many years later. However, he added, "I'm not inclined to feel sorry for any defendants in a trial." In 1970, Wade became the first named defendant in a lawsuit by a woman who had been denied an abortion. The Roe in the famous case was Norma McCorvey, a single, pregnant carnival worker in Dallas County whose lawsuit challenged the constitutionality of Texas' 100-year-old ban on abortions except in cases where a woman's life was in jeopardy. In 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court cited the Constitution's implied right to privacy in deciding that women had a right to decide about abortion in the first trimester. Legal protocol called for Wade as top prosecutor to be named first in the suit, but he did not try the case himself. McCorvey finally met Wade in 1995, but told the Associated Press that she bore no resentment toward him. "I never considered him as an enemy," McCorvey said. "He was just doing his job." Wade was a folksy, cigar-chomping figure with an East Texas drawl whom Melvin Belli, Ruby's defense lawyer, once belittled as "a country bumpkin." He was fearless around those he considered his enemies, however, once labeling a judge on the state's highest criminal court "a mental case" after the judge reversed some convictions won by Wade's office. After retiring from the district attorney's office, Wade handled criminal cases for a prominent Dallas law firm, where he maintained a strict policy of heading home by 4 every afternoon to watch reruns of his favorite TV shows: "Gunsmoke" and "Bonanza." Case Became Subject of Film One of Wade's most controversial cases involved Randall Dale Adams, who was found guilty and sentenced to death in 1977 for the murder of a Dallas police officer. Adams' case became the subject of "The Thin Blue Line," a 1988 documentary that won acclaim as a powerful indictment of the Texas justice system. Adams' accuser basically confessed to the crime in the film, which was instrumental in winning Adams' freedom in 1989. -- A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/"www.ctrl.org/A DECLARATION DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion informational exchange list. Yahoo - Doctor stumbles onto orgasm machine http://biz.yahoo.com/rf/010207/n07281052.html Wednesday February 7, 3:44 pm Eastern Time Doctor stumbles onto orgasm machine By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Correspondent WASHINGTON, Feb 7 (Reuters) - All he was trying to do was ease her chronic back pain, but when Dr. Stuart Meloy placed an electrode into one patient's back, she groaned. Not in pain, but in delight. ``This is a direct quote -- she said, 'You're going to have to teach my husband how to do that','' Meloy, an anesthesiologist and pain specialist in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, said in a telephone interview. Meloy had stumbled onto an unexpected side-effect of the pain device he was using -- an ability to cause orgasm. He has just patented this unexpected use of the device, a spinal cord stimulator made by device company Medtronic (NYSE:MDT - news). Now he is trying to talk Minneapolis-based Medtronic into testing and marketing the device for this use. It all started with a relatively routine operation for Meloy, who was trying to help a patient with severe and untreatable back pain. ``She had had a number of back surgeries for degenerative disk disease and fusion surgery,'' Meloy said. He was trying Medtronic's spinal cord stimulator to see if it might work in her case. ``These people are either suffering a lot or there is certainly a place for narcotics to be used.'' The surgeon has to place an electrode very precisely in the patient's spine. The idea is to find the specific nerve bundle that is carrying his or her pain signals to the brain. It requires some trial and error and sometimes, Meloy said, the surgeon hurts a patient, who will groan or cry out. At first he thought this had happened with this patient. SHE MADE A ``DIFFERENT'' SOUND ``But the sound that she made was a little bit different. I asked her what it was,'' he said. That was when she recommended he teach her husband the technique. ``The next day in the operating room, the nurses were all asking me how one gets that,'' Meloy deadpanned. Meloy said he repositioned the electrode and was able to help the patient's pain. ``We able to reduce her narcotics usage by about a half,'' he said. He was not able to offer her a dual use of the pacemaker-sized device, which is implanted under the skin. The device works not to block pain but to change the way the patient perceives it. ``Instead of feeling pain, they feel what most people describe as a buzzing sensation in the affected area,'' Meloy said. ``It's not so much a distraction as a change in perception. You are altering what they feel.'' This seemed to work the same way in pushing the a patient's orgasm button. ``Yes, she literally got a buzz,'' Meloy sighed. ``Yes, we turned her on. The puns can go on and on.'' But he hopes to turn this to a serious use. ``Once you get past the giggles and smirks, as far as orgasmic dysfunction goes, it is a very real problem. People don't like to talk about it. But if we are going to utilize a device like this, it would be to allow people to have more of a normal life than some sort of supernormal life.'' In other words, no ``Orgasmatron'' as featured in the 1973 Woody Allen movie ``Sleeper.'' Meloy hopes he could develop the device for temporary use, to retrain a patient's sexual response. ``You could just get them back in the groove or whatever.'' Then the device could be used outside the body via a catheter. But Meloy stressed it was no toy. ``Even for pain management patients we certainly exhaust all other possibilities before we start utilizing this type of technique,'' he said. Will it work on all kinds of people, men as well as women? ``I observed it twice,'' Meloy said. ``I hang out with other people who do pain management, and I have heard of it working with men as well,'' he said. ``Is it reproducible? I sure hope so.'' ** A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/"www.ctrl.org/A DECLARATION DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion informational exchange list. Proselytizing propagandic screeds are unwelcomed. Oh, and by the way, you may have been assimilated. If you use Juno's free Internet service, you should be aware of a new policy the company announced earlier this month. Juno Online Services has announced the establishment of the Juno Virtual Supercomputer Project, a distributed computing project that seeks to "harness the unused processing power" of the computers owned by subscribers to Juno's free service. In other words, Juno plans to use YOUR computer to run "computationally intensive biomedical and other applications" for the benefit of commercial clients. You can read the Juno press release here: A href="http://www.juno.com/corp/news/supercomputer.html" http://www.juno.com/corp/news/supercomputer.html /A Under the new terms of service, Juno users must allow the downloading of software to perform these calculations, must agree to leave their computer on 24 hours a day if requested, and give Juno permission to initiate a telephone connection to Juno's central computers at any time. This announcement gave the shivers to privacy pundits, who worry that it may open the door for government investigators to use Juno to gain access to customers' computers without their knowledge. Granted, privacy pundits stay awake nights dreaming up doomsday scenarios. But if you're a Juno user, you'll have to decide if it's worth saving a few bucks a month to put up with these new requirements. =[ Tourbus Rider Information ]=== The Internet Tourbus - U.S. Library of Congress ISSN #1094-2238 Copyright 1995-2001, Crispen Rankin - All rights reserved Help the hungry, poor and sick - for free! http://FreeDonation.com Subscribe, Signoff, Archives, Free Stuff and More at the Tourbus Website - http://www.TOURBUS.com = A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/"www.ctrl.org/A DECLARATION DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion informational exchange list. -Caveat Lector- From: "Nurev Ind Research" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Jesus grew up in the boondocks, not the capital. Even so, I doubt that boonie towns were integrated. They weren't 'integrated' as much as being comprised of a mix of peoples, not all of whom practiced a pure form of the Judaic faith... Pagans were common, even after nearly a millennium of Jewish repression. Poor Pagans. I guess the I guess the Jews gave them a hard time about burring their children and other human sacrifices. Very few pagan religions in the Middle East practiced human sacrafice, especially 'burning' one's children... The only evidence of ritual infanticide exists in Cyprus, nowhere else... All the Jews did was drive out the temples. The pagans remained. Many Jews themselves were pagans or still practiced elements of pagan religion (as do we today). If you mean Hellenism. Yes. If you mean something else, then not likely. They also married pagans. I doubt it. "Not likely" and "I doubt it" are hardly scholarly answers. I suggest that you actually RESEARCH the history of religions of both the area and the era... Intermarriage between Jews and pagans was a common problem, indicated time and again in the OT...one would find more temples and altars to Baal in the countryside than Jewish temples... Re: [CTRL] In search of Mary Magdalene Part 1
-Caveat Lector- From: "JJ Jones" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thank you for helping to clear the issue up about Mary Magdalene. I have been doing some research and find nothing of such reference in the Bible about her "profession". If memory serves me right, it was her mother who approached Jesus and asked him if he could help her daughter who suffered from demon possession. Therefore, in conclusion, being demon possessed is Mary Magdalene's only and greatest sin, according to the Biblical account. Also, it is interesting to note that Mary Magdalene was the first Apostle. The word Apostle meaning, "one sent forth". She was the first one sent forth with a message to the followers of Christ that he was alive and had been resurrected. Therefore, I would speculate that the person who originally dubbed Mary Magdalene as a prostitute was incensed upon realizing that a woman could possibly have been the first Apostle. According to an article I read in Bible Review, Mary Magdalene enjoyed much honor and respect in the early church, and indeed was elevated to a status not unlike that accorded "Sophia", the Goddess of Wisdom... It was only when Rome imposed its rules, regulations, and customs (carried over from pagan days) -- customs which did NOT allow for women to attain high office -- was the Magdalene painted with the slur of being a prostitute... [CTRL] Mafioso Anthony Giacalone, dead at 82
-Caveat Lector- http://www.latimes.com/obituary/20010223/tCB00V0591.html Friday, February 23, 2001 Mafioso Anthony Giacalone, 82, Dies By LISA M. COLLINS, Associated Press Writer DETROIT--Anthony "Tony Jack" Giacalone, a reputed mafia captain who many believe knew the secret behind the disappearance of Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa, died Friday. He was 82. Giacalone died after being hospitalized with heart and kidney problems, the FBI said. St. John Hospital refused to release details at the request of family. With Giacalone's death may have gone the secret to Hoffa's presumed death on June 30, 1975. Struggling to regain power of the corruption-plagued Teamsters, Hoffa had arranged to meet that day with Giacalone and New Jersey Teamster boss Anthony Provenzano. Instead, he vanished from the parking lot of the Machus Red Fox Restaurant in suburban Detroit. When told of the Teamsters leader's disappearance, Giacalone said: "Maybe he took a little trip." Provenzano has since died. At the time of his death, Giacalone was under a 21 -count federal racketeering indictment, said John Bell Jr., special agent in charge of the FBI's Detroit branch. He said Giacalone was investigated along with several others about Hoffa's disappearance. Agents have said they think they know what happened to Hoffa, but lack the evidence to press charges. Keith Corbett, lead prosecutor for a federal mafia strike force in Detroit, said there was never any indication Giacalone would talk. Impeccably dressed and icy-eyed, Giacalone was a familiar figure striding through reporters and photographers who gathered to record his court appearances. His heart and kidney problems kept him from trial on a 1996 indictment on charges including bombings, conspiracy to commit murder, extortion, bookmaking, loan-sharking, and attempting to gain a hidden interest in Nevada casinos. Giacalone, who raised show horses on a Michigan farm, served time on a 10 -year conviction for tax evasion in 1976. -Caveat Lector- From: "Aleisha Saba" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Now Clinton had a weakness but he usually kept it under control There is nothing in the record to show that he EVER 'kept it under control'... now how many "ladies: other than ladies of the evening would put themselves in such a compromising position - to be alone in a hotel room or anywhere with someone else's husband - in off hours with no official business. Let me tell you about a temp job I had once... Little more than clerical -- inputting data into a computer; it was for a local schoolboard, who for some reason was meeting in the evening at a local motel...not in a meeting room, no they'd rented two adjacent rooms, I was set up in one where they'd plugged in a laptop next to the bed, and periodically would send someone in to hand me some data to type. The rest of the time I watched TV (at their suggestion). My point is, sometimes legitimate business DOES get conducted in 'off hours' in motel/hotel rooms...and just because I was in a motel room in the evening wouldn't have excused any of the men on that schoolboard trying to force me into having sex with them (none did, BTW, but I still felt pretty uncomfortable with the setup)... But I'm sure that if one of them had done so, you, Aleisha, would call ME a 'floozie' and blame me, the victim, instead of the perp who really would have deserved the blame... [CTRL] Fw: Architect-to-the-stars Arne Hasselqvist, dead at 63
-Caveat Lector- This just in today...I kept the listowners comments included One has to wonder about those 'valuable documents' June - Original Message - Sent: Saturday, February 17, 2001 5:09 PM Folks, what story, if any, does this obit remind you of? I seem to recall some rich old jet-setter who died under similar circumstances, locked in the bathroom of his flat on... the Italian Riviera? Malta? Sorry for the fuzzy details -- my memory isn't what it used to be -- but this is bugging me. JR - - - - - http://www.latimes.com/obituary/20010217/t14344.html Saturday, February 17, 2001 Arne Hasselqvist; Architect Created Celebrity Homes Arne Hasselqvist, 63, a Swedish architect known for designing celebrity homes in the Caribbean. Hasselqvist, 63, and his son Lukus, 23, were found dead inside their rental apartment in Nassau, Bahamas, after firefighters extinguished a blaze. Fire crews said the Hasselqvists had been evacuated from the burning duplex but apparently returned to try to save valuable documents. They were believed to have died from smoke inhalation. They had lived on the island of Mustique in the Grenadines for many years and were in the Bahamas to work on a home in the Old Bahama Bay resort on Grand Bahama Island. Hasselqvist, who ran his own international architectural design firm in St. Vincent, West Indies, designed and built homes on Mustique for celebrities including Britain's Princess Margaret, designer Tommy Hilfiger and musicians Mick Jagger and David Bowie. Yes, I thought it droll, too...oh well, I suppose a lesbian could always strap on a dildo to perform an act of sodomybut it is a rare sex act amongst lesbians, else why would they prefer sex with another female? But the bottom line is that Ellen DeGeneres is AN ACTRESS...which means she PLAYS ROLES which have absolutely nothing to do with her private life... -Caveat Lector- From: "Aleisha Saba" [EMAIL PROTECTED] IBM once was a great country; I'm sure that IBM would like to consider itself as a sovereign country rather than the corporate entity that it is... But it is only 'great' for the handful of ruling elite at its helm; ask any of the rank-and-file employees, who coined the joke that IBM stands for "I've Been Moved"... I worked at IBM for a few months for a private contractor; it was one of the few sites I worked at where I was glad I was not an employee of the client...rarely have I seen and experienced such a dehumanizing environment, where one was expected to gladly forego any vestiges of individuality and instead sublimate one's personality to that of the corporation... Re: [CTRL] Lucifer Rides the Whirlwind Directs the Storm!
-Caveat Lector- As often as the Illuminati depicts Lucifer as an "angel", So does the Bible itself... The Declaration of Independence was deliberately planned to be issued on July 4, 1776. Point of fact, the Declaration of Independence was signed and 'issued' on July 2nd, not July 4th. It took two days to get enough copies printed and sent to the various states, which is why July 4th became associated with the signing instead of the real day, July 2nd. So the fact is that the Declaration was 'issued' over the course of 3 days, the 2nd, the 3rd, and the 4th... This date is 66 days after the Satanic High Holy day period starting April 30, Since, as I have pointed out, the Declaration really occured on the 2nd, that would make it 64 days... Not that it matters, since I'm not aware of any occult or satanic significance to the number '66'... and it was exactly 13 days after Summer Solstice on June 21. Actually 11, since the real date was July 2. The number eleven DOES have significance in numerology, though, as does the number 22... The writer also seems to be unaware of the fact that June 24 is a very important day to Masons... Our Founding Fathers waited until there were precisely 13 states before they founded the Union. Coincidence. Up until April of 1775, most of the 'founding fathers' were still hoping for a peaceful solution to the growing tension, and hoped to remain loyal subjects of the king. Even after hostilities broke out, most weren't willing to make the total break from England that signing the Declaration would require... Finally, when you add the numbers forming the year, 1776, you get '21', a most revered number to the occultist. As I mentioned above, the number twenty-two DOES have significance in numerology, but I have never heard any significance given in any occult literature to the number 21...perhaps you can enlighten us as to your sources? God cursed these angels, and they became known as demons. A word derived from the Greek, not Hebrew. Fact is, according to the Bible, Lucifer and his minions are still angels, albeit fallen ones... From facing the Washington Monument obelisk [Baal's erect penis] Reminds me of the old song by the folksinger, Melanie, called "Psychotherapy"...(to the tune of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic), "it isn't really hard to find out what the psyche tries to hide...a thing is a phallic symbol if it's longer than it's wide...Glory, glory psychotherapy...Glory, glory, sexuality...Glory, glory, now we shall be free, as the id goes marching on..."... Also, obelisks, being Egyptian in origin, should be representing Osiris' penis if they represented any pagan god's...which I doubt, but considering Egyptian mythology (Osiris was hacked into pieces, all of which except his penis were recovered by his wife, Isis), an Egyptian god would be the more likely subject than an Assyrian one... Most scholars consider obelisks as a type of 'finger' pointing to the sky/sun, not a penis... Truly, the End of the Age appears to be close. So, what does all this diatribe boil down to. On one hand it seems that the writer is claiming to be a patriot, but then turns around and paints all the Founding Fathers as 'illuminists', which the writer equates to satanism...ergo, our country was founded by satanists, therefore the whole foundation of the country is satanic... Seems to me to be an argument to OVERTHROW the foundations of our system of government, rather than an argument to defend it... Re: [CTRL] Tensions high as U.S. Patriot missiles arrive in Israel
-Caveat Lector- The U.S. brigade from the 69th Air Defense Artillery arrived in Haifa and is preparing for an exercise, called Juniper Cobra. The exercise - beginning Thursday and lasting 14 days - is one component of plans to increase U.S.-Israeli defense coordination amid threats of regional war that could involve Iraq and Syria. Does anyone know if the U.S. has ever conducted military exercises in Israel before? I for one don't seem to remember this ever having occured before, but I could be wrong... Unfortunately, I don't think placing the troops there on exercise will do anything in the way of protecting Israel or in garnering any worthwhile experience against terroristism for our troops...but I DO think that it puts our soldiers in the position of being 'sitting ducks', and for a possible repeat of Yeman... Israeli military source said the arrival of the Patriot battery does not effectively strengthen defense capabilities. The Patriot was developed as an anti-aircraft missile. But since the Gulf war, Raytheon has improved the missile so that it can intercept enemy projectiles. But defense sources said the Patriot is simply too slow to intercept the more advanced missiles being developed by Egypt, Syria and Iran. Which begs the question as to why Egypt, Syria, and Iran seemingly have more advanced weaponry than we do... Re: [CTRL] Flags (was: Ashcroft-The Artful Dodger)
-Caveat Lector- From: "Amelia" [EMAIL PROTECTED] What a lovely fairy tale you have concocted concerning slavery in the northern states! Dem's da facts, ma'am...I suggest you get yourself a few good books on American History... Reread my sentence, too. I said they EITHER gave them letters of freedom OR just dumped them. meaning sold them in the South in an especially timely manner, only when it was evident they were going to be freed anyway. Ditto those letters of freedom--only after it was imminent anyway. Hardly the magnanimous gesture you attempt to fabricate. Excuse me, but _I_ am not the one who fabricated the claim in the first place...if YOU reread MY sentences, you will see that I refer to the people involved as 'imaginary'... If my sentence makes no sense to you, it is your reading deficiency as it is perfectly clear what I have stated. Only in your own 'sleep depraved' [sic] mind... There were not that many states admitted in the Missouri Compromise and they were Midwestern with low populations at the time. Just ONE free state admitted under the Missouri Compromise negates your claim that each and every state of the union was a slave-holding state at one time... New England where you live is where the most slaves were. And you can back up this claimhow? Talk about your revisionist history! Southern slaves were often given letters of freedom also and many did not leave their original homes even after receiving their letters. Yes, that claim DOES sound extremely revisionist... It had become economically unfeasible in the South to maintain large slave populations on individual farms and would have been eliminated anyway but Lincoln wanted the credit, If this was true, then why were all those supposedly starving whites still holding onto slaves at the time of the Emancipation Proclamation? Seems to me that if it was 'economically unfeasible' to own slaves even before the war, all those supposedly starving white slaveowners wouldn't have needed to be forced to free them by Lincoln, they would have just opened the door and told their slaves to get the hell out of there... The factories of New England wanted the adult slaves to replace the children they were using as slaves in their factories without the expense of having the cradle to grave responsibility of slaves. Bull. By the time the Industrial Revolution took hold in the northeast -- and this was in the century BEFORE the Civil War -- slavery was already being legislated out of existence in those states. The industrialized north had no need of slaves, or even ex-slaves, as there were more than enough bodies immigrating from overseas to work cheaply in the mills and factories... You spend the time researching the ethnic makeup of those who worked in the northern mills and factories at the time, and you will find that almost none of them employed blacks...first it was Irish and German, later it was Italian, Portuguese, and Russian and eastern European... That situation lasted until well into the 20th century...blacks didn't start getting employed in any numbers in factories until the early 20th century, and then for the most part only in Detroit and Chicago... And yes, that is exactly what I am saying, that whites shared what food they had with blacks for whom they were responsible. Gee, if big bwanna white massa was so good, it's amazing that any black slave accepted being freed...seems to me those ex-slaves would have immediately voted to reinstitute slavery, since according to you they had it so good... Re: [CTRL] Fwd: [CIA-DRUGS] Unseen but Very Real Protests at Washington (off topic)
-Caveat Lector- - Original Message - I have heard this stated on TV news and commentary shows several times recently. I suppose I should have tried to recheck it myself and not just take them at their word but these were national shows, and I assumed they were at least accurate. Can you, from memory as it is not worth going to trouble, cite which party was in control of congress for these years? Sorry, I really couldn't say, going back 50 years...I do know much was made of the 'Democratic Congress' during the Reagan years...but it seems most dems just laid down and let whatever the Reagan admin want, get...so while they may have nominally been in control during those years, they rarely exercised it... Not sure what the makeup of the Congress was during the Eisenhower, Nixon, and Ford admins...but I believe that every Democratic administration also enjoyed a predominantly Democratic-majority during their tenure... Maybe that is what they mean by "in charge." Perhaps...but it is the administration in power which sets policy. Even if there was a Democratic majority during Nixon's administration (and I'm not sure there was), until the Watergate scandal Nixon enjoyed basically unchallenged power. Prior to Watergate, the only thing I know that Congress and the public balked at was Nixon's desire to change the uniforms of the White House guards...remember the crazy design he wanted, better suited for a small Balkan country perhaps? Congress didn't call him on the carpet over continuing the war in Vietnam, neither did they do anything substantive in regards to his incursions into Cambodia... Also, I think the "owners" of the stable and the horses do at times try to undermine each other and bicker among themselves. The horses and the stables may try to undermine each other, but their owners encourage this, so that the public is given a show of a 'two party system' that in fact does not exist. The bottom line is, you have the same backers putting money on ALL the horses in the race...and they also put their money into the 'up and comers' back in the stables... Re: [CTRL] Flags (was: Ashcroft-The Artful Dodger)
-Caveat Lector- From: "Amelia" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Well, the Southern states were not the only states where the institution of slavery was practiced. I believe all states had it prior to TWBTS, some a few years back from that time/event. No, that is wrong. Free states admitted under the Missori Compromise never allowed slavery within their borders... And those northern states that had at one time had slavery had outlawed it long before the war. Also, in northern states slavery had been utilized in a much different manner than in the south...in the north, a slave could redeem him or herself, either by buying their freedom (if they were lucky enough to be able to save enough), or by serving as a slave for a set period of time; I believe this varied from state to state, but was usually from 7 to 12 years. At the end of their term of service, the slave was ruled to have redeemed his or her worth and was then set free. In many northern states, slave owners were also required to pay their slaves wages, albeit much lower wages than required of a free man or woman... They cleverly sold theirs into the South just prior to the outbreak of the war. Some gave them letters of freedom but many just "dumped" them right before the outbreak of conflict. This makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. If these imaginary northern slaveowners gave their slaves letters of freedom, that can hardly be considered 'dumping' them. And if these imaginary slaves had letters of freedom, how could they be sold into slavery in the south? Also, remember the Emmmancipation Proclamation was not signed until 1864, after a state of general starvation existed in the South. Then the slaves were freed with no way to feed themselves, etc. other than trying to take from people who were already starving. So you wish us to believe that prior to the Emancipation Proclamation, all those starving white massas gladly gave up what little food they had to their black slaves? I hardly think so! And the freed black slaves had as much, or little, opportunity to feed themselves in the same manner their ex-masters did... This was careful timing to ensure maximum harm being done to all parties. Slavery is certainly a crime against humanity but all parties here were guilty of practicing it. So have many "civilizations" such as Egyptian, et al. So do the Kuwaitis today...doesn't make it right... June A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/"www.ctrl.org/A DECLARATION DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion informational exchange list. Re: [CTRL] Gifts Were Not Meant for Clintons
-Caveat Lector- From: "Prudence L. Kuhn" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Anybody know how all that stuff Nancy Reagan took was routed? If she had to pay a million in back taxes, there must have been a bale of it, and I'm really curious. If I'm not mistaken, the majority of Reagan's haul (and believe me, I'm on your side when it comes to the Reagans) consisted of the designer outfits donated to her by designers who, unless they thought the outfit was going to end up in The First Ladies Collection at the Smithsonian (there IS such a collection there, BTW), probably intended for Nancy to keep the 'donation'... That is quite different from someone donating something to the White House itself, thinking that it will become a permanent part of the White House collection...only to find that their gift to the nation was usurped by the departing First Couple as a personal gift... I could understand someone in that situation being understandably peeved... Still I wouldn't give anything to anyone at the White House or to the White House either. I think it's considered an honor to have an item accepted to be part of the White House collection...it's considered a gift to the country as a whole, not to any one person who happens to be president at the time... What did they do with the old kitchen table and chairs by the way? That interests me. Are the things given to Good Will or are they burned as religious objects? Prudy I couldn't say for sure, but years ago I read an article (in The Smithsonian magazine, as it turns out) regarding a major auction house in the DC area, that specialized in auctioning off old stuff from federal property, and the occasional gift to a congresscritter or First Couple that under law could not be accepted as a person gift... The majority of auctions were your old empty file cabinets, etc. But according to the article, usually there were at least a handful of choice items which could possibly be gotten for a song...retired china sets, old furniture, etc. I believe that according to the article, the proceeds went to the GAO... Re: [CTRL] Man with Machete Hurts Kids in Pennsylvania School
-Caveat Lector- From: "Aleisha Saba" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Wonder if this guy used his real name - a Russian? He doesn't claim to be Russian...it's his wife who is supposedly Russian (which may or may not be significant)... Remember Son of Sam Berkowitz? Who the NYC police now admit did not act alone? Who admit that they shouldn't have shut down the case after Berkowitz was arrested, because evidence pointed to others being involved...? But this need to slaughter the innocents - the children? The "Son of Sam" victims were young adults coming home from dates or a night socializing at local discos...hardly 'children'... My bible calendar indicates ritual slaughter that date of February 2..sacrifices Roasted groundhog, perhaps? ;-) So a crime like this was done maybe while the guy was under hypnotic control of drugs but what and or who was he going to get? Ostensibly the kids. You know, we would have heard nothing on the media for days except the story of the terrible slaughter of the little kindergarteners... Perhaps it was hoped this guy would have a semiautomatic, when all he had was a machete (perhaps he used it in gardening)...perhaps it was orchestrated so that regulation of implements that could be deemed potential weapons would become an acceptable concept to the public. My mother always carried a small, pearl-handled jackknife on her. When I was a teenager I asked her why, and she said that it had been her mother's, and that my grandmother had also carried that knife everywhere. It was considered a necessary tool, especially for working in the garden, and no one questioned it. My mother eventually gave me that knife, and I too carried it on my keychain like she did. I had that knife for years, and no one ever questioned me carrying it. But nowadays I run into trouble, I've gotten stopped too many times for 'carrying a weapon', that I no longer carry it. The thing was only 2 inches long (closed), but in an atmosphere that sees a nail clipper in school being as bad as a gun, anything with the potential to cause even minimal harm to another is verboten... Strange that at the same time I found my ability to carry my little pocketknife on my keychain constrained, one began to see more and more teargas and mace canisters carried on keychains... Oh well, I still have my can opener on my keychain...I was only stopped once for that, I was taking photographs of a local klan rally, and before the cops on the perimeter would let me get close enough to take the pix, I had to give the can opener to them. Guess they were afraid I might open a few klan kans... ;-) Putin you know let a little 14 year old kids leg be amputated when gangrene had set in for as a punishment Fourteen is hardly 'little', and amputation of a gangreneous leg is hardly punishment...it would have been necessary to save the kid's life... Crimes like this are not to be taken too lightly.emember Jesse Jackson was going to turn to the streets and that was more blackmail to covr his evil deedshis theft and his adultery and bastard kid. Anyone with a modicum of sensibility and caring would hate anyone who murdered children, no matter what color of skin the murderer has or what color of skin the victim has... What about Littleton - an obvious attack on white Christian children - this was oh neo nazis attack but when it came out Klebold was jewish and his grandfather was involved in - oh but he was rich wasn't he... So now you are implying that 'the Jews' are behind Littleton? What about the OTHER boy who was with Klebold? He wasn't Jewish, I think I read somewhere that he was Lutheran. Are we going to hear about 'the Lutheran conspiracy'? The non-Jewish boy also came from an Air Force family...if there is any conspiracy here, I would look in THAT direction, and not to the religion, or professed religion, of the boys. And then we had Son of Sam...oh do not say his was ritual murder. The EVIDENCE points to a conspiracy...the shootings (remember, not all of the victims died) had ritualistic overtones, but were not rituals per se; most, if not all, of the shootings were probably filmed by the conspirators for later use. The story is here - this country since it liberalized has become sadistic, and land of sodomites who would attempt to take to the streets. This country has ALWAYS been sadistic...it was just easier to sweep it under the rug in the past. -Caveat Lector- From: "Samantha L." [EMAIL PROTECTED] saba is a hatemonger and should not be sending this shit to the list- is it not against the rules? I agree. The invective from Saba has intensified since the embodiment of that bile was selected as president. Actually, I only noticed an increase in Saba's looniness the past few days. I passed it off as probably being due to two factors... First, Saba has begun an argument with someone posting to this list under an ID that is fairly new; I suspect, as has been done in the past, that this ID is in fact herself, or part of a group intent on disrupting the list with meaningless arguments...or at least in succeeding in closing the list to meaningful dialogues because the petty bickerings take up the limited number of posts allowed to the list per day... Second, I noticed that Saba's increasingly strange posts coincide with the first of the month; I figure she must have gotten her monthly allotment of meds on Thursday, and poor sot is having a binge. She really should learn to ration the allotment, so that the medication can last her through the end of the month... ;-) It's gotten to where I can't even read Saba's meanderings anymore. I rarely have ever been able to. I would say that a good 75 percent of what she posts I delete after giving a cursory glance, because quite frankly I just don't have the time to waste with it... [CTRL] Man with Machete Hurts Kids in Pennsylvania School
-Caveat Lector- A couple of things pop out for me in the article below, which makes this whole event seem mighty suspicious, e.g. 'staged'... First, that the attacker says he has no idea what he was doing at the school; in and of itself, this perhaps would suggest nothing...someone could be under the influence of drugs, or a psychotic, and have episodes of memory loss. But coupled with this is the fact that this guy asked that his bail be set at $2 million...usually people try to get their bail REDUCED, not raised to such a high amount that one presumably cannot be bailed. It is almost as if this guy WANTS to remain in jail for some reason, and not get released. Is he perhaps afraid that 'someone' will get to him if he is released from custody? Also, for all the bad stuff we read about public education and the teachers and principals in the public system, it's nice to read about how heroic the principal and staff of this school were in trying to subdue this guy. I hope that the principal makes a full recovery of her injuries... June === REUTERS Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001 Man with Machete Hurts Kids in Pennsylvania School FELTON, Pa. (Reuters) - A man wielding a machete went on a rampage inside a Pennsylvania elementary school on Friday, injuring five kindergartners, two teachers and the principal before staff members subdued him, authorities said. The children -- four girls and a boy, all aged 5 or 6 -- were slightly injured in the melee. But a kindergarten teacher and the principal at North Hopewell-Winterstown Elementary School both required surgery for hand lacerations. The wounds of 41-year-old principal Norina Bentzel were so severe that doctors sent her by air ambulance to a hospital that specializes in reconstructive hand surgery 50 miles away in Baltimore. State police identified the suspect as William Michael Stankewicz, 55, of Johnson City, Tenn., and charged him with attempted murder, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon on school grounds. He was jailed in the York County prison after asking that his bail be set at $2 million, a request granted by the district magistrate presiding over his arraignment hearing. The outer doors of the elementary school are kept locked as a security precaution. But police said Stankewicz entered the building shortly after 11:30 a.m. behind a parent and attacked Bentzel when the principal confronted him in the lobby. An ensuing struggle between the machete-wielding suspect and school staff spilled into a kindergarten classroom, where five children were hit by the machete, police said. Staff members finally subdued Stankewicz in a health room at around 11:45 a.m., just before police arrived and took him into custody. A 911 emergency call placed to York County Emergency Services by a panicked school staff member said the assailant was also carrying a baseball bat. But police said the report proved to be false. There was no immediate word on a motive for the attack. But during his arraignment hearing, Stankewicz described himself as a former Baltimore school teacher whose Russian wife and two children reside in York County. He also said he had no idea what he was doing inside the elementary school. A spokeswoman for Memorial Hospital in nearby York, a city about 10 miles northwest of Felton, said 52-year-old kindergarten teacher Linda Collier was scheduled for surgery on Friday evening. Third-grade teacher Stacey Bailey, 33, was treated for minor injuries and released. The five injured children -- four 5-year-olds and one 6-year-old -- were treated for minor cuts at another nearby hospital. -Caveat Lector- From: "Theodor Parada, MD" [EMAIL PROTECTED] This is such a crock of sh-t! The sea waters won't rise, it is simple physics. Take a glass of water and ice, let the ice melt, it doesn't overflow (same principle). You may be a MD, but you're obviously no geologist. While it is true a melting ice cube won't raise the level of the water it floats in, the analogy doesn't account for the vast amount of Antartic ice that sits on bedrock. It is THAT ice, if and when it melts and the runoff runs into the sea, that would be worrisome in regards to rising sea levels... -Caveat Lector- From: "Theodor Parada, MD" [EMAIL PROTECTED] You are such an idiot. You are starting to rival Saba in your stupidity. Unlike the Arctic, the Antarctic ice is mostly on solid land. Whet it melts it becomes additional water running down to the sea. I REALLY hope you are not a doctor for humans or pets. Joshua2 LOL!! Then have them prove it mathematically, they won't be able to. What's to "prove", mathematically or otherwise? Common sense would tell you that when LAND-BASED ice melts off of bedrock, the runoff would cause a rise in sea level. [CTRL] Flags (was: Ashcroft-The Artful Dodger)
-Caveat Lector- From: "Aleisha Saba" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Bet you fly the Gay Pride flag but would burn the Confederate and all for which it stands? Don't know about Samantha, but I know _I_ would burn the Confederate flag 'and all for which it stands for', in a heartbeat... As for the 'Gay Pride' flag...well, that's a funny thing... Seems that for years, the guys who fly the really huge (23 feet by 18 feet), expensive kites down at the beach where I also fly, had at least one of these 'rainbow' flags to fly off the line of the big kites (these kites pull 1000 to 2000 pounds)... These guys are married and straight. The rainbow flag had nothing to do with 'gay pride' to them, these flags were marketed in almost every kite retail outlet, both physical stores and online. If anything, people equated the rainbow flag to the "Rainbow Coalition", which originally only meant civil rights for people of all colors... Then suddenly the rainbow flag got hyped as the 'symbol of gay pride'...and the kite fliers at the beach never flew theirs again... ;-) Two years ago, 2 gay guys came along and were totally overwhelmed with the sight of all those really huge, rainbow-colored kites in the sky...and one of them announced that he was going to buy himself one to fly the following month at a gay pride festival being held at a park in Hartford...because he announced that such a kite, in rainbow colors, certainly was an appropriate symbol of gay pride...(bet he was in for a bit of a shock when, if he really did pursue buying one of these things, that the cost of the kite, matching 25-foot spinsocks, 300-foot tube tail, and all the necessary rig to launch, fly, and keep it anchored runs $2000 to $2500)...not to mention understanding the DANGER involved in trying to handle one of those things without training)... I have a rainbow-colored windsock in the shape of a trout. These too have been marketed in kite outlets for years (we attach various types of windsocks not only to kites, but to the flying line as "line candy")... This past summer, someone started selling these windsocks on Ebay, hyping them as "show your gay pride, fly one of these rainbow-colored trout windsocks"...so apparently I now have a gay fish... ;-) Next we'll be hearing that all those St. Patricks Day images of pots of gold at the end of rainbows shows gay Irish pride... ;-) So the point I'm trying to make is, just because someone is flying a rainbow-colored item does NOT necessarily mean they are making a statement regarding homosexuality... ;-) June A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/"www.ctrl.org/A DECLARATION DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion informational exchange list. I can understand why it took the sone that long to contact the police, since he was estranged from his mother and supposedly did not keep in close touch with her. But you would think that at least one of the many people who worked for and with her in her organizations would have reported her disappearance. [CTRL] Fw: Got Change For a $200 bill?
-Caveat Lector- - Original Message - 31-JAN-01 -- Got Change For a $200? A Danville, Kentucky Dairy Queen employee accepted a $200 bill with the face of George W. Bush on Sunday. She took the $2.12 food order and gave back the $197 in change. "Essentially, the story is that somebody at a drive-in ordered some food and passed a $200 novelty deal with George Bush on it," Danville Police Detective Bob Williamson said. "At a distance it looks like a real bill, it's got the green color," Williamson said when asked how the cashier possibly could have mistaken it for "real" currency. This bill depicted Bush on one side and an oil well on the other. The White House lawn contained signs saying "U.S. deserves a tax cut," "No more scandals" and "We like broccoli." Police are still looking for the customer who passed the phony bill. Because there is no actual $200 currency, the culprit could face a charge of theft by deception but not counterfeiting, Williamson said. - DailyDarwin.com Staff A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/"www.ctrl.org/A DECLARATION DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion informational exchange list. There is a show on PBS called "Mystery", which shows primarily British imports. About a year ago on one of these imports, "Prime Suspect", a case of child rape/murder was solved due to these cameras. A big deal was made about how the suspect would never have been caught if it weren't for the fact that the suspect's car was caught on one of these cameras, showing the suspect was at the location of the crime at the time the crime was committed, when the suspect seemingly had an alibi for being elsewhere. I thought at the time that it was very interesting that this British show presented these cameras so matter-of-factly, and indeed I got the impression the whole plot twist of the cameras being used to solve a horrific crime was orchestrated to help "sell" the idea of these cameras... [CTRL] Nixon (was: Q-Who will MOST BENEFIT By School Vouchers???)
-Caveat Lector- From: "Aleisha Saba" [EMAIL PROTECTED] This is a Conspiracy Theory List.speculation, based on facts, is still theory. That doesn't mean that one is exempt from presenting the facts and documentation behind one's theory... You ask people to prove everything they say? No, one doesn't have to PROVE everything they say, only present the documentation behind their theory, and if one doesn't have such facts and documentation then their theory should be clearly labeled as their personal opinion. My work according to Henry Regnary, a man named Domick Abel, was extremely provocative, and highly original.for I claimed the Mafia got JFK, RFK, and tried to get Teddy based on a bible code used as communications which also was linked to sabotage and KGB. Aleisha, you go on and on about the Kennedys and the Mafia, what do you know about Richard M. Nixon and his close ties with organized crime? I'm currently reading "Arrogance of Power" by Anthony Summers, and he goes into some details how 'in bed' Nixon was with both the Mafia and the big oil companies...and the book mentions an intriguing period in Nixon's early years, just after he'd married Pat (who really was named 'Thelma', much to my surprise, and who apparently had her own skeleton-in-a-closet when she met Nixon)...but unfortunately the book skips over this strange episode in his early life (unless perhaps the author gets back to it later in the book)... Nixon graduated from Duke University law school in the late 1930s; now ostensibly he was just some geeky hayseed from the hicks of southern California, but upon graduation from law school he applied at 3 places, and seemingly only 3 places, for work... And very interesting places they were, indeed. The first 2 were the most prestigious law firms at the time, both in NYC; according to available documents and the recollections of those involved in the process (altho not from the actual participants, Nixon included, themselves), Nixon's interview at the first firm went very well; it is not clear why Nixon did not end up working there. According to Summers, Nixon really had his sights set on the 2nd firm he interviewed with, and there are no documents remaining of that interview process, nor anyone who was involved in it who was willing to discuss what went on; but it can be surmised that it must have gone well, based on Nixon's close alliance in later years with those who were involved in the interviewing... And yet, for some reason, Nixon did not end up working at this 2nd firm, either. Now, what is intriguing about all this is that the first firm was the firm of William "Wild Bill" Donovan, who would later go on to create the OSS (precursor to the CIA) in WWII; the 2nd firm, the one where Nixon apparently really wanted to work, was the firm of John Foster Dulles and Allan Dulles, who apparently were involved in interviewing Nixon. So it is very strange that the only 2 law firms this geeky hayseed from the sticks applies to upon graduation from college are run by the very men who would later go on to create the major spy agencies... Now, as mentioned before, Nixon seemingly applied to THREE places upon graduation; his 3rd application was made to the FBI, and apparently most of the documents pertaining to his application still exist. And according to these documents, Tricky Dick did very well. So well in fact that his application was 'booted upstairs' for a 2nd round of interviews, and in fact notations are on his application papers showing that he was in fact approved to be hired by the FBI to be an agent... Yet suddenly the approval was withdrawn, and he was turned down by the FBI... Now the book details all of the above fairly thoroughly; though intriguing, its what happens next in Nixon's life I find really interesting, and which the book seemingly ignores... For Nixon then heads back to Whittier, and takes a job working for a small, bohunk, backwater law firm in Whittier run by a friend of Nixon's father And by all accounts, Nixon was less than impressive; in fact he bungled his first court case so badly that the presiding judge threatened to have him disbarred for life... During this time Nixon also was involved in some questionable business deal with a couple of buddies, a venture that went bust and ostensibly left Nixon with barely a nickle in his pocket... And yet, after courting Pat for over a year, he gets married and immediately after their marriage they start on a jaunt, lasting almost a year, that took them throughout the western states, and then eventually to Havana, Cuba, of all places which, according to Summers, Nixon said he enjoyed thoroughly... And it is THAT intriguing galavanting like gypsies for a year that I find so interestng, and which Summers just lets go with a mention in a paragraph, without pursuing further. How could this bumbling backwater lawyer, who supposedly barely had a nickle to

-Caveat Lector- From: "Amelia" [EMAIL PROTECTED] I am not saying this is true or not true. Just forwarding. KS The Real Story of Rosa Parks I have been out most of this week so today is the first chance I have had to go over this situation with the alleged failure to use a disclaimer. The above was at the beginning of the post by Kindred Spirit in addition to the "FYI" in the subject matter. I believe this was far more than adequate as a disclaimer. The hell it is. Stating that one doesn't know whether the contents of one's post is true or not does NOT say anything about if one ENDORSES the contents of the post. One can post something that one doesn't know is true or not -- or perhaps even knows is a lie -- and still endorse the opinions expressed in the post. I could forward a post to the list from someone who says they work for the government and have proof that outer space aliens have taken over the highest offices of government. I may know that the person who wrote the original post is lying, and doesn't work for the gov't nor have any 'proof' of outerspace aliens working in the government or at Burger King...but if I BELIEVE that outerspace aliens exist and have infiltrated our gov't, then I may feel the issues raised in the post warrant forwarding it on, even tho I know it is a 'lie'... And if I put a statement at the beginning saying "I don't know if this is true or not", it doesn't mean I disagree with the contents of the post... Your usual attempts to silence anybody not in agreement with you display your little agenda. I wonder if Kris really wants you to decimate his list for him while he is trying to promote the book, etc. Kris and I had a very pleasant phone chat the other day when he was in town, and he didn't express any opinion that he thought anyone was 'decimating' the list... JUNE, I was surprised that you remained silent while Nessie threatened to hurt another poster but after reading your remarks concerning Super Bowl Sunday, apparently you are into this men hurting women thing, too. You are an idiot. Explain to me how perpetuating a LIE regarding the supposed rise in spousal abuse following the Super Bowl furthers the cause of women in general, and abused women in particular? Rather, if you encourage the spreading of the myth of Super Bowl causing increased spousal abuse, you do a great disservice to the true cause of helping women, because you discredit the whole field. As it said in the Super Bowl post, there is no logic in the sentiment that perpetuating the LIE regarding Super Bowl = increased spousal abuse will do ANYTHING to further the cause of helping abused women. I wish you could see some of the women who arrive in the Huntsville shelter, which is totally inadequate. You assume that I: a) have not worked at abuse shelters myself, and b) that I myself have not been a victim of abuse, and c) that I don't currently have a problem with (ongoing) abuse/stalking... This has been a cause on which I have spent a great deal of my time and effort over the last three years and it is very dear to my heart. I also moderate a support list for these women. [CTRL] Yet Another Example of Non-Disclaimers In Action...
-Caveat Lector- I don't know if the following is true or not... Does that mean I have 'disclaimed' whether I believe or endorse the following? June - Original Message - Zambians Traumatized By Crash-landing Flying Wizards http://farshores.topcities.com/farshores/pflywiz.htm More than 30 stark naked people suspected to be wizards "crash-landed" on rooftops of houses owned by families, institutions and filling stations in Zambia last year, leaving the population puzzled. The latest of these bizarre incidents occurred on New Year eve when one of such suspected wizard crash-landed in Kasanda, a mining township near the midlands central town of Kabwe, 80 km north of Lusaka, the capital. He sustained fatal body and knee injuries on impact. The suspected wizard, believed to be in his 50's, reportedly fell on the roof of house owned by one Christopher Muwowo at about 01:15 hours Zambian time, causing pandemonium among sleeping family members. Muwowo, a minibus driver and other members of his family were awakened by a loud bang on the roof, which also prompted dogs to start barking. The man's wife, who was the first to get out of the house, was astonished to find a stark naked man kneeling on the doorsteps. She yelled for help. When Muwowo dashed outside and asked the strange visitor what he was looking for at that awkward hour, the naked man simply said "kuku" (meaning Please Help). After that, he could not answer or talk anything until he was taken to Kasanda police station. Curious neighbours, mostly dressed in their night wear who had heard the man's screams, went to Muwowo's house, only to be shocked by the presence of a naked man sprawling on the ground. The naked uninvited guest was taken to Kasanda Police Station. "Cases of witches and wizards crash-landing are rare in Kabwe but very common in Lusaka," said one onlooker. Among the first people to rush to Kasanda Police Station to have a glimpse of the wizard was Kabwe Mayor John Siamuzyulu and Central Province Police Chief Ryan Chitoba. Residents eager to see the wizard besieged the police station. A good Samaritan provided a blanket to cover the hapless man. But since he could not talk, the police had difficulties to establish his name, age, his destination and where he was coming from. The suspected wizard was later taken to the Department of Social Welfare to await being taken to the Traditional Healers and Practitioners Association of Zambia or THAPAZ who had agreed to exorcise him. Unfortunately, the wizard died before he was charged and police have appealed to the Zambian public to come forward and identify the man. THAPAZ president, "Dr" Rodwell Vongo, who heads a group of 40,000 local traditional herbalists, claimed in an interview with PANA that the Kabwe wizard was the only fatal case out of the over a hundred wizards who had so far crash-landed on roof-tops of houses in the country. "They normally crash-land, giving lack of fuel as the cause of crash-landing and ending their missions prematurely," Vongo said. Asked to clarify why wizards must fly naked, Vongo explained that this was the only way they could conceal their identity when flying. "But the most important secret in their view is that the potency of their concoctions would respond to their taking off from the ground when naked than when they are dressed," he claimed THAPAZ's director of Information, "Dr' Alex Kekelwa, said that exhaustion of fuel was not the only reason why wizards crash-land at times. "Sometimes, some of these chaps fly over enemy territory, and they are shot down with traditional ground to air missiles. "I am a traditional herbalist and my mission is to save life through healing and so THAPAZ does not recognise witchcraft. But if a wizard flew over my house, which is my territory, I will certainly respond by protecting my family and myself by shooting down a wizard. I do not want to say anything beyond that", Kekelwa stressed. Kekelwa declined to unravel the motives of flying wizards, saying he was not one of them to know their strategies. "May be some of these guys have concubines they want to visit hundred of kilometres away from where they live while others have sinister motives of going to kill their targeted enemies." . Re: [CTRL] Fwd: {slick-d} CNN Fires Hundreds of Staffers!!!
-Caveat Lector- Shocked employees are being told to pack it up and get out in hours as layoffs hit the once-mighty allnews network CNN this week. Hundreds of fired staffers are forced to sign papers agreeing to release and severance pay. Security card-keys and IDs are confiscated, but not before passwords on their work computers are changed, preventing them from retrieving personal files and cutting them off from their e-mail. Some are returning to their desks to find their telephones disconnected. The NEW YORK POST's Adam Buckman reports that uniformed security guards stand and watch as the dismissed - some crying - clean out their desks. The guards then escort them like common criminals to the exits. There's nothing different here than has happened in any number of other companies who have also had layoffs over the past decade... It SOP to have those laid off sign severance agreements, and to deactivate their card keys and computer logons; it is also not uncommon to have security guards on hand. Hey, if you were an employee who was NOT laid off, wouldn't you want some measures taken to make sure that your coworkers who did get laid off didn't at the very least vandalize property, including computer systems, or at worst 'go postal'? "I felt like a criminal, a crook, a loser," one fired on-air talent told the DRUDGE REPORT late Tuesday. "Maybe I am all those and more, I worked here for so many years. I'll never be able to log on to AOL again, without feeling blind rage." Hey, when I used to have an AOHell account, I almost always felt blind rage when I logged in -- or more accurately, attempted to log in to a system that more often than not has all access lines busy... I really experienced blind rage once I was able to get in, and was constantly confronted with evidence that my emails were being censored by AOHell, and that they were in bed with the fedspooks, who took inordinate interest in some very innocuous private chat rooms June A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/"www.ctrl.org/A DECLARATION DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion informational exchange list. Re: [CTRL] WHITE HOUSE OFFICES LEFT 'TRASHED': PORN
-Caveat Lector- From: "Samantha L." [EMAIL PROTECTED] My oh my. Yes, I think the perpetrators of a coup de etat should be frothing in righteous indignation over vandalism. It is perfectly appropriate. Bush and Clinton are racehorses from the same stable. I can't believe anyone with half a brain or a modicum of ethics can CONDONE the vandalism and theft conducted not only in the White House but on Air Force One. In the business world if a departing executive and his or her staff did what the Clintons and their staff did, the cops would be involved and arrests would be immediately forthcoming. It's disappointing that Bush has indicated he is going to sweep this under the rug, but as I said, he's from the same stable as Clinton. The White House and Air Force One are maintained by our tax dollars, so every American citizen should be outraged, if not over the blatant display of sophomoric vindictiveness of the outgoing administration, then over the blatant distruction and theft of public property. Re: [CTRL] In a First Act, Bush Blocks Clinton Orders
-Caveat Lector- From: "Kindred Spirit" [EMAIL PROTECTED] It has always been my understanding that "Caveat Lector" was there for a reason before each post and that a person could post something and not expect to be attacked personally because of the content of the post. Then you really are the idiot you come off as being... If an articel "Articel"? calls somebody a name that is not the same as the person who posted it doing so, unless they are also the author of the article. Yes, you are an idiot. Unless someone specifically puts a disclaimer of "Forwarded Without Endorsement", then it is to be expected that the person forwarding the post agrees with the sentiments expressed therein. "Caveat Lector" has nothing to do with whether the person sending the post actually agrees with the opinions expressed within the post. It just warns the reader to not necessarily accept what is posted at face value, it says nothing regarding what the person sending the post actually feels or believes about the post. So everybody endorese every article "Endorese"? they post 100% or issue an elaborate explanation. No explanation is necessary, unless the person forwarding the post does not agree with the sentiments expressed therein and is only forwarding it for information purposes only...then it is up to the person doing the forwarding to clearly state that they do not endorse what is in the post and are forwarding for information purposes only. And if they don't, they have no business wasting bandwidth on the list by whining for days that they were misunderstood. And it is very impractical because a person might endorse paragraphs 3, 5 and 7 but not 2 and 4. Then it is up to you to specifically spell out what you DO endorse, and what you do not. And failing that, you have no business bitching and moaning over the fact that people presumed you endorsed the opinions expressed in the post you forwarded. I can change my name if you do not like it. You do it all the time, Colleen, whether we like it or not... It was changed twice for me already by people just like you, once when I started to school and again to give me an anglo name. My anglo name is Abbey. I hate it. But this time I think I will cahnge it to Prudy June. Anglo names are better, aren't they? I wouldn't know. I'm not even sure what an 'Anglo name' really is... "June" comes from the latin "Juno"... Why not just stick with Colleen, Colleen? We are band and you are good. "We are band"? Is that anything like "We are Borg"? As for you, June, telling me to get a skin (scalp) on ebay, you are just too funny for words and your ethnic slur is not wasted on me. There was nothing ethnic about it, idiot. First off, I never used the word 'scalp' (and by your referencing it, I presume you are claiming to be of Native American extraction?)...I specifically told you to get a thicker skin, if you want to play with us big kids. Your continual whining, bitching, and moaning proves my point -- you are extremely thinned-skinned, and if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen. I wonder why posting an article containing an ethnic or racial slur written by somebody else (and containing other more important information)is so evil but yours to me is not. Because you are an idiot, who sees ethnic slurs when the slur has nothing to do with your ethnicity, but with your tiny, pea-sized brain. Until this post of yours, I had no idea what ethnicity you claimed for yourself. And it matters not a whit what your ancestors were, it doesn't change the fact that you are still an idiot. You cannot tolerate people who do not agree with you. There are many people on this list who disagree with me...Prudy is one of them. What I really cannot tolerate is the idiocy and stupidity such as you constantly display. And for your edification, June, the People of the Hills North American Natives did not traditionally take scalps any more than your own ancestors probably did. Again, where do you get anything regarding scalps? I never once said anything about scalps, and had no idea you claim to be a Native American. Maybe you and Prudy and Nessie could go to ebay yourselves and get something to make you less hypercritical and some manners and a new decency as yours is seriously flawed. None of you contribute very much to this list And what do you define as contributing 'very much to this list'? -Caveat Lector- From: "Nessie" [EMAIL PROTECTED] With those same tax dollars the democrats killed at least a half a million Iraqi women and children. To ignore that, but get upset over a couple computer keys, is sick, evil, or both. Why should both issues be mutually exclusive? I'm pissed off over both... And BTW, it seems to be much more than just a few missing keyboard keys. I say spray painting graffiti in the hallways of a national monument is a pretty serious matter... I would be just as upset at vandalism done to the Jefferson or Lincoln Memorials, the Washington Monument, Statue of Liberty, etc. June A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/"www.ctrl.org/A DECLARATION DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion informational exchange list.
