'ELVIS' FEAR OVER BIN LADEN

WASHINGTON, December 14--FEARS are growing in Washington that Osama
bin Laden could be killed and no one will ever know about it.
Officials are cautioning that the massive bombing assaults on the
Tora Bora mountains may not only succeed in killing the al-Qaeda
leader but also mean that his body will never be found.
In the event that he is killed and his body is found, the US has
obtained DNA samples from bin Laden's family to help identify his
body, ABC Newsreported yesterday. But the use of daisy cutter bombs
that can laywaste to huge swaths of terrain and destroy caves has
highlighted the possibility of his body never being found. Without
mentioning bin Laden, Paul Wolfowitz, the Deputy Defence Secretary,
said: We may have killed people in caves, and we may never know that
we got them. Or it may, at the very least, be a very long time before
we know.
Another concern is that if bin Laden is killed or kills himself, his
supporters would ensure that no trace of his body was left. One
Western diplomat said he feared that there would be rumours of him
for years to come, inspiring his followers to keep his flame alive.
There would be more sightings of him than Elvis, he said.
Donald Rumsfeld, the Defence Secretary, said yesterday that he was
convinced bin Laden was still in Afghanistan. We are chasing him. He
is hiding. He does not want us to know where he is, Mr Rumsfeld
said. CNN reported later: The United States has reason to believe
that Osama bin Laden is surrounded by opposition forces and US forces
in a cave complex in Tora Bora.
