It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: -- 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.' I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the people's injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." --The Civil Rights March on Washington in 1963. {} "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." --from a Birmingham jail. {} "I submit to you that if a man hasn't discovered something he will die for, he isn't fit to live." --in Detroit. {} "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." --Strength to Love, Ch. 3. {} "An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concern for the broader concern of all humanity." {} "When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, 'Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!' " ______--------********O********--------______ THE GOOD NEWS "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth." (Matthew 5:5) ______--------********O********--------______ FAITH IN BRIEF "Christian thinkers spread the belief that every single human is made in the image of God, and thus has a 'calling' or 'vocation' to be creative, inventive, and intellectually alert in a practical way, in order 'to build up the kingdom of God'. This call to creativity and inventiveness accounts for the economic dynamism of Jewish and Christian civilization." --Michael Novak ______--------********O********--------______ FAMILY IN BRIEF "From the days of John Dewey on to the present, educational gurus have produced an unending succession of vague, slippery and piously lofty writings -- all leading off on a tangent from the hard job of teaching basic skills. Seldom has this flood of words even acknowledged, much less addressed, the central fact that schoolteachers and administrators are drawn disproportionately from the dregs of the college-educated population. The ultimate question, however, is not why these people defend themselves by all means necessary. The big question is why we continue to take them seriously, when their track record is so bad. Are we that easily impressed by goddledygook or intimidated by airs of 'expertise'? What are they experts at? Failure, excuses for failure and evasions of the very concept of failure. Of all the frauds which pervade the public schools, none is more hypocritical -- or more destructive -- than the pretense that they are trying to avoid the unfairness of subjecting disadvantaged children to standards and tests that they are not equipped to handle." --Thomas Sowell ______--------********O********--------______ OPINION IN BRIEF "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." These are perhaps Martin Luther King's most remembered words. That notwithstanding, his one-time inner circle of black leaders, and those who have risen since, have abandoned his dream, and now advocate a political and social agenda which dictates that children are to be judged by the color of their skin, not the content of their character. They are effectively leading black America back to subservience, this time under government masters. Martin Luther King always preached that black freedom was, before all else, a black responsibility. But, as noted in the Wall Street Journal, "On this King holiday, black America is saddled with a leadership that constantly argues the helplessness and weakness of its own people in order 'to keep whites on the hook' -- a leadership that promotes and benefits from the very contingency it ought to be trying to break." Black and white liberals, chief among them, Bill Clinton, have betrayed Martin King's dream in pursuit of their own self-aggrandizement, their own expedient political agendas. Mr. King was a controversial man. While we don't support the political "atonement" of declaring a national holiday in Mr. King's honor commensurate with those to celebrate our Independence and our Founding president, and though we are aware of the "plagiarism" issues concerning his dissertation and some of his notable works, we do, just the same, recommend that our members pause to read his remarkable messages in pursuit of justice for all. However great his human flaws, his message of peace and reconciliation, responsibility and character, is "an idea whose time has come," as he often quoted Hugo. To that end, we invite you to link to our Web pages below, and read what we believe are his best works. "I HAVE A DREAM" (AUGUST 28, 1963) http://www.Federalist.com/HaveDream.htm LETTER FROM BIRMINGHAM JAIL http://www.Federalist.com/BirmJail.html ______--------********O********--------______ POLITICAL FUTURES "Politicians are playing the race card, often from the bottom of the deck. The die is cast for the November 2000 campaign. Democrats will demagogue and accuse Republicans of being 'mean-spirited' and 'anti-minority,' and Republicans will quiver and quake and utter mindless blather about 'diversity' and 'inclusion.' The day after the election, both parties will return to their stale agendas. And the beat goes on." --Affirmative action opponent Ward Connerly ______--------********O********--------______ FOR THE RECORD Total tax collections in the U.S. are expected to be $2,667,000,000,000 in 1998. This represents 35.4% of the country's total income. In comparison, medieval serfs paid an effective tax rate of 33.3 percent. (Source: Just Facts) ______--------********O********--------______ THE LAST WORD On the heels of Ms. Rodham-Clinton's interview on the CBS's "Late Show" with David Letterman, an interview granted out of desperation because her polling positives have tanked, comes news from ABC that the "quiz" given Rodham-Clinton about New York state facts and figures -- a quiz viewers were led to believe was spontaneous, though Rodham-Clinton answered all the questions correctly -- was fixed. Hard to believe Ms. Rodham-Clinton would attempt to defraud her public.... That scripted dialogue might explain, in part, why the interview was so boring, but there were a few other reasons. From NewsMax.com comes "David Letterman: The Top Ten Reasons My Hillary Interview was So Lame." 10. My FBI file. 9. If there's one thing Howard Stern has taught me -- lesbians equal ratings. 8.
