THE FOUNDATION

"The belief in a God All Powerful wise and good, is so essential to
the moral order of the world and to the happiness of man, that
arguments which enforce it cannot be drawn from too many sources nor
adapted with too much solicitude to the different characters and
capacities impressed with it." --James Madison

______----********O********----______
ICTUS IMPRIMIS

"The Lord will have compassion on Jacob and will again choose Israel,
and will set them in their own land, and aliens will join them and
will cleave to the house of Jacob." (Isaiah 14:1) ++ "And the angel
said to her, 'Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with
God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and
you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called
the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne
of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob
forever; and of his kingdom there will be no end.'" (Luke 1:30-33)
++ "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most
High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be
called holy, the Son of God." (Luke 1:35) ++ "And in that region
there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock
by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of
the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. And the
angel said to them, 'Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news
of a great joy which will come to all the people; for to you is born
this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord." (Luke
2:8-11) ++ "Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared
with the angel, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests." (Luke 2:13-14)

INSIGHT

"No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the
reward for what he gave." --Calvin Coolidge {} "Nothing can bring
you peace but yourself. Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph
of principles." --Ralph Waldo Emerson {} "It doesn't take a hero to
order men into battle. It takes a hero to be one of those men who go
into battle." --H. Norman Schwarzkopf ++ "Bravery is the capacity to
perform properly even when scared half to death." --General Omar
Bradley {} "Although the world is full of suffering, it is full also
of the overcoming of it." --Helen Keller {} "You can preach a
better sermon with your life than with your lips." --Oliver Goldsmith
{} "He is the promised Messiah, the Son of God come to earth to offer
salvation for all mankind." --Ronald Reagan

UPRIGHT

"Follow your dreams.... You never know where life's gonna take ya. I
never sat and thought, 'Gosh, if I work hard I'll be president of the
United States.' It wasn't in my vocabulary. But you never know. You
never know. Trust the Lord." --President George Bush ++ "In a
president, character is everything. You can't buy courage and
decency, you can't rent a strong moral sense. A president must bring
those things with him.... He needs to have a vision of the future he
wishes to create. But a vision is worth little if a president doesn't
have the character -- the courage and heart -- to see it through."
--Peggy Noonan {} "Christians view history as a cornucopia of
complexity because we understand the doctrine of original sin. We know
that because the human race is fallen, people are capable of great
evil. But because we are made in God's image, we are also capable of
great good." --Charles Colson ++ "However, the Bible conceives the
world in very real terms, and recent events have clarified what the
real world is about. It's about the struggle between goodness and
wickedness, about which our Constitution is not the ultimate
authority." --David Klinghoffer ++ "For a religion that is said to
respect human rights and equality, Islam does a rather thorough job of
trampling the former and denying the latter, from Africa's west coast
to East Asia. While they're voluble in demanding tolerance for their
faith, when it comes to the suffering of minorities in Islamic
countries, American Moslems are mute." --Don Feder ++ "A religion
that is not in fact the government is a potential adversary of
government. Faith seriously held, in whatever creed, implies a
categorical allegiance to something other than Washington's
bureaucracies or the tenets of CBS." --Fred Reed {} "America's
unending political argument is about how freedom both depends on
government and is threatened by it, and competes with other values."
--George Will {} "Risk is the inevitable product of liberty -- and
it's responsible not only for great tragedy, but also great triumph."
--Tony Snow {} "The notion of a world government to defend our
rights would have sent the founding fathers running for their
muskets." --Pat Buchanan {} "Utopian internationalism has its uses
among squabbling equals during peacetime, but only military
preparedness and a willingness to use force can stop aggressors from
killing the innocent." --Victor Davis Hanson {} "It looks like
Santa's come early this year for those of us who know America needs to
build a missile-defense system as soon as possible. ...After all,
we've seen the death and destruction that fuel-laden commercial
airliners can cause. Imagine what a nuclear-armed missile could do."
--Edwin J. Feulner ++ "What happened on September 11th was that the
sheer scale of the atrocity rendered the polite fictions of democratic
politics untenable. Pre-emptive surrender -- gun control, the ABM
Treaty -- is no longer a virtue." --Mark Steyn {} "This nation at
Christmastime has been brought together and ennobled by its grief.
When America grieves, however, others best not think us despondent.
.. America's grief ought not to give comfort to those who caused it.
Rather, America's grief ought to give them pause to reflect on their
future. They who have been so eager to greet Allah in Heaven may soon
discover that their everlasting host is not Allah, but the smiling
innkeeper at Hell." --R. Emmett Tyrrell

EDITORIAL EXEGESIS

"Most religions have been able to inspire nobility and cruelty, glory
as well as madness, and Islam is no exception. But that does not
preclude the possibility that something in Islam lends itself, more
than other religions, to exterminationist and totalitarian politics.
The Islamists who have interpreted their religion in that manner are
our enemies. They are not the entire Muslim world, but they are not a
tiny and isolated minority of it either. Since they claim to speak for
all Muslims, it is up to those Muslims who reject the Islamists' views
-- including, yes, Muslim immigrants to America -- to repudiate them
in word and deed. And it is up to the rest of us to demand that they
do so. This would not be an unprecedented demand: Especially in recent
years, both Christian churches and the secular culture have held
Christians accountable for the enormities committed in the name of
their religion. The extent to which Islam has contributed to this war
-- as also to the poverty, illiberalism, and general backwardness of
the Muslim world -- is an open question. It is a question that
Americans will necessarily debate, under the circumstances, and it was
arrogant folly of American political elites to believe that
incantations and intimidation could stop them from debating."
--National Review

DEZINFORMATSIA

"...[C]onservative Republicans have a total knee-jerk thing about SDI.
They cannot get over it." --NPR's Nina Totenberg **Yeah, we do have a
"total knee-jerk thing" about protecting our countrymen from a
ruthless adversary only a few years from obtaining ballistic missiles!
++ "Today President Bush deliberately broke a treaty with Russia, as
he promised he would -- the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty that
bars both countries from building a missile defense system. Without a
defense, both sides are vulnerable, and that's a deterrent." --NBC
talkinghead Tom Brokaw **We checked, and the other signatory -- the
USSR -- is no longer in business. ++ "Tonight, why the U.S. is
deliberately going back on its word in front of the rest of the
world." --NBC's Brian Williams {} "The Israelis have been on the
attack again against the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. The
Israelis say they're trying to force Mr. Arafat to stop Palestinian
terrorists who are killing Israelis. The Palestinians say they're
making it impossible for him to do anything while his government is
being attacked." --ABC talkinghead Peter Jennings **In other words,
the roof is leaking but can't be fixed when it's raining -- and when
it's dry, doesn't need to be fixed.... {} "Dick Armey's mandate to
cut taxes, it's complete. Taxes have been cut as much as is humanly,
or inhumanly, possible. So, he can go." --Time magazine's Margaret
Carlson **So, according to the Leftmedia, cutting taxes is "inhuman.
{} When he first went to Afghanistan, that was way before September
11; there was no thought that he would be taking up arms against the
American government." --Newsweek's Eleanor Clift, who has consumed one
too many Johnny Walkers! {} This week's "Media Buster" Award: "When
it comes to arrogance, power, and lack of accountability, journalists
are probably the only people on the planet who make lawyers look
good." --Steven Brill

______----********O********----______
SOCIOCRATS

"When President Bush appointed his Social Security Commission back in
May, it was clear just what they were going to recommend. All 16
members of the Commission had expressed support for privatizing Social
Security, a plan that puts the system in jeopardy." --DNC news release
**Jeopardy of what...growing fast enough to provide for real
retirement income security? {} "We in the wealthy countries have to
spread the benefits of the 21st century world and reduce the risks so
we can make more partners and fewer terrorists in the future. ... We
have to make a world where there are far fewer terrorists, where there
are fewer potential terrorists and more partners. And that
responsibility falls primarily upon the wealthy nations, to spread the
benefits and shrink the burdens." --Bill Clinton, the arbiter of
"responsibility"!

______----********O********----______
VILLAGE IDIOTS

"It is as important to focus on what is missing from the tape as what
is present on it. There is nothing on the tape that reveals bin Laden
possessed information only a person guilty of planning this horrible
crime would possess. In other words, the truth of the incriminating
statements made on the tape is not self-proving: It relies on
believing bin Laden is telling the truth." -- Harvard Law Professor
and pop Communist (redundant perhaps) Alan Dershowitz playing Johnny
Cochran with Osama bin Laden {} "The Berkeley, Calif., City Council
voted Tuesday night to supply workers who answer the city's general
information phones with material about the Central Committee for
Conscientious Objectors. The idea is to have information available so
staff can refer anyone who calls asking about how to avoid military
combat." --Associated Press **Memo to the Berkeley CCCO: To avoid
combat, don't enlist! {} "The WTC [World Trade Center] was not just
an architectural monstrosity, but also terrible for people who didn't
work there, for it said to all those people: 'If you can't work up
here, boy, you're out of it.' ... Everything wrong with America led to
the point where the country built that tower of Babel, which
consequently had to be destroyed." --Red Hollywonk Norman Mailer  {}
>From the "Village Academic Curriculum" File: Before sending your
relief check to help starving teachers in Middletown Township, N.J.,
consider the following. First, their average salary is $56,000 -- not
bad for a nine month job (that's $75,000 annualized)! Of course, they
are not striking to protest their salary, but to protest an increase
in their health insurance premium from $250 to $600 -- not per month
but per year.

SHORT CUTS

"Great to have you back. Just don't steal the silverware!" --President
Bush greeting Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe
on a White House receiving line {} "What is it with Republicans that
every time they get in a closed-door smoke-filled room negotiation
with Democrats, they always emerge having lost their shirts?"
--Stephen Moore {} "Well, it's not the greatest recruiting video."
--Tony Snow on the Osama bin Laden videotape {} "The only
distinguishing feature about John Walker is that he's such an obvious
compendium of clapped-out clichés from America's Left Coast the wonder
is the mullahs didn't automatically take him for a CIA plant." --Mark
Steyn {} "It's now, more or less, official. Yasser Arafat is
'irrelevant.' That's just a tad better than being dead." --Alan Caruba
{} "The nations of Europe ... for the first time in history adopted a
common currency, the Euro. And most of the people over there are
singing its praises. Kind of a Euro paean." --Lyn Nofziger  {}
"Geraldo says that if he runs into Osama bin Laden he will kill him
himself. Osama has responded by saying, 'Hey, if I run into Geraldo,
don't bother, I will kill myself'." --Conan O'Brien {} "The city of
Pittsburgh invented the term 'Sparkle Days' so that no Pittsburgher
would have to utter the controversial word 'Christmas' (or C------mas,
as it is known in our house, since we hate to give offense)." --John
Leo ++ "Notice that Christmas -- this, I promise, was calculated --
has become the Holiday Shopping Season. The churches have been
neutered." --Fred Reed

Jay Leno.... Still no takers on the $25 million reward for Osama's
capture. You know what we need to do is put a time limit on this, like
72 hours -- you have from six p.m. Friday to Sunday at midnight to
bring him in. .... And even though Osama may have very well been out
of the country a week ago, our forces continue to bomb Afghanistan.
Our leaders have said that we will continue to bomb as long as Geraldo
is still there. .... After 50 years NBC is getting rid of its ban on
hard liquor ads. This idea was decided at the company Christmas party
last night. NBC now stands for Nothing But Cocktails. .... The Navy
is investigating its "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Policy. How can they
investigate something that no one can ask or tell about? .... It's
Christmas time! You know what people in Beverly Hills call the man who
brings gifts once a year? Daddy! .... Gary Condit has made it
official, he will be back up for re-election. You know what that means
-- he's back to dating again!

David Letterman.... I was walking through New York City today and the
streets are busy. I think it's because everyone is out returning their
Ramadan gifts. .... I was ordering something for Mom and I wanted to
get her one of those weed whackers, but I think I mixed it up.
Instead, I think I ordered a daisy cutter. .... This Sunday night
there's a big special right here on CBS. It's Garth Brooks live from
Tora Bora! .... Did you see the tape? It was Osama bin Laden and a
group of his buddies and they are having dinner at a popular place in
Kandahar called Thank Allah It's Friday. But you see, this tape is
complicated, because they had trouble translating what the waiter was
saying. This Osama bin Laden, what a kidder he is. After the dinner he
skipped the check and fled to Pakistan. .... Reports now say that
Osama bin Laden will commit suicide on TV. This will be the first
television suicide since ... the Academy Awards!

Argus Hamilton....
Osama bin Laden is shown on the video speaking with the leaders of
al-Qaeda. They're all wearing beards, sporting turbans, and openly
talking about killing Americans. Now maybe airport security can give
grandmothers the benefit of the doubt. .... USA Today interviewed
women subjected to pat-down searches after their underwire bras set
off airport security buzzers. They're furious. If they wanted to be
treated like this, everybody knows that Bill Clinton is looking for
office help. .... The Hart Senate Office Building was found to still
contain traces of anthrax in the mailrooms and ventilation system. The
bacteria causes insanity. Just last week unemployment went through the
roof and the senators voted themselves a pay raise. .... President
Bush is pulling the U.S. out of its ABM Treaty with Russia. However
both countries did agree to shift all our missiles and aim them into
the ocean instead of at each other. Everybody's happy about this
except Carnival Cruise Lines. .... President Bush told reporters
that he and his family plan to spend Christmas at their ranch near
Crawford, Texas. Reporters hate this place. Crawford is so small they
only have one stop light, one McDonald's, one Taco Bell and six
Starbucks.
