-Caveat Lector-

Mostly, the people have bought into the propaganda put out by the two
ruling parties: "A vote for a third party is a wasted vote." I find it
remarkably funny that when I talk to people on a one to one basis, they
agree more with Libertarians than with either of the Republicrats.
However, when I suggest that what they actually want will not come about
unless they actually vote for the man who espouses their ideals, they
parrot the line "But I don't want to throw away my vote." Very
frustrating. It seems that, to many
Americans, voting is like betting; they want to bet on who they think
will win, not who they want to win. To me, if you don't vote you have no
right to bitch about how things are going.

[CTRL] Commiserations

2000-12-14 Thread nexusmagazine

-Caveat Lector-

Sorry to see the Bush family coup of America.

The Australian media and talkback radio airwaves reflect that we all are
dumbfounded at your electoral process, and especially that 12,000 or so
key votes WERE NOT ALLOWED to be counted in your election.

I feared our system could head the same way. Both political parties have
repeatedly tested the water in terms of public approval on removal of
compulsory voting, which I assume to be the first step to grabbing more
power.

That's right, here in Australia voting is compulsory. If we failed to
count 12,000 votes there would be national uproar, in fact, it would
never come to that under the present system.

Happily though, you Americans may have ensured that defenders of
compulsory voting will always have handy ammunition of what could happen
if we give it away.

regards

Duncan

How does your government enforce compulsory voting? What happens to
someone if they *don't* vote? What is the rate of spoiled ballots?

Thanks,

Kelly

If we do not go and have our name crossed off the 'list' in our local
polling booth, we eventually get sent a 'please explain' and/or a fine.

There is nothing stopping anyone keen enough going to every booth in the
electorate and voting again and again. As long as your name is ticked
off once, that is all the computer looks for.

Preferences are what gets most of our politicians in. ie if a candidate
doesn't receive enough primary votes, then his/her preferences flow onto
someone else (of their choosing).

Our system is also open to massive rorting (you wouldn't believe how many
dead people vote before the computer catches up with the obits column and
deletes them from the electoral rolls).

As for spoiled ballots - I do not have figures handy.

Basically though, we feel a little bit empowered, and we feel that every
vote DOES count. If we want to send a protest message to the big two in
power, we vote for an independent or someone the partys in power like to
attack.
