Doctors discover secret of Alien 'baby'

By Sam Wallace

A RUBBER toy alien found on a station platform was taken to hospital after
it was mistaken for a human foetus. London Underground's Buckhurst Hill
station in Essex was closed after the Alien Egg figure was discovered by a
station cleaner.

The toys are about 4ins long and covered in a slimy jelly substance. The
figures, which are sold in an egg-shaped pod, are curled up in a foetal
position. A spokesman for the London Ambulance Service said that the
Metropolitan Police, who were concerned that there could have been a
suspicious death, had alerted paramedics.

He said: "No one was taking any chances. It's easy to judge in retrospect
but everyone was very worried about what might have happened. We took the
item to hospital so a doctor could have a proper look. He declared it an
alien toy."

A spokesman for the British Transport Police said the toy was quite
convincing: "If it can leave paramedics with room for doubt then its going
to have to be fairly lifelike."

The aliens, made by H Grossman in Glasgow, cost £1.99 and are tipped to be
one of the most popular toys this Christmas. Already seven million have been
sold and 3.5 million are expected to be bought before Christmas.

Martin Grossman, the firm's managing director, said the aliens were not
realistic: "I don't know how on earth a neon green or metallic grey alien
with massive ears, three fingers and its legs stuck together can look like a
baby. They come in lots of variations but never flesh colour."
