-Caveat Lector- Check out Dan's site. It ROCKS ;) Dave Hartley http://www.Asheville-Computer.com/dave From: "Dan Russell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> http://www.kalyx.com General Smedley Butler was a fascinating man. From my upcoming book, Drug War: Covert Money, Power & Policy., available shortly thru Amazon, B&N, etc. This is a history of the modern drug war. That's a link to my illustrated chapter summaries. My first book, Shamanism and the Drug Propaganda, the ancient history of the drug war, is already up on Amazon: "Gen. Smedley Butler, 1881-1940, the legendary Marine sent to track down Sandino, was so disgusted by the cruelty and slave-labor he encountered, that he concluded Sandino was right and intentionally failed to track him down." "To say that Butler is a Marine legend is an understatement. He is the Marine legend, one of the few to win the Congressional Medal of Honor twice. He was a frontline hero of every major conflict the U.S. participated in during the first quarter of this century, including the Boxer Rebellion, the Spanish-American War and the Great War." "In 1935, after vocally supporting his fellow WW I veterans in their Bonus Army March - to the consternation of his own former high command - Butler reflected, 'I spent thirty-three years and four months in active service as a member of our country’s most agile military force-the Marine corps. I served in all commissioned ranks from a second lieutenant to major general. And during the period I spent most of my time being a high-class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and, for the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer for capitalism.'" "'Thus I helped make Mexico...safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank to collect revenues in... I helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras "right" for American fruit companies in 1903.'" "Butler was disgusted by the stealthy assassination of Sandino, a legitimately elected populist democrat. He felt humiliated to have been an indirect part of it. After that, Butler repeatedly insisted that the interests of the corporations weren’t worth the life of a single one of his boys. "War is a Racket," wrote this marvelous old warrior. "Only a small ‘inside’ group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes…. How many of these war millionaires shouldered a rifle?"38 His small book then goes on to excoriate, by name, the multinational corporations then running Central American politics for their own advantage."
