-Caveat Lector- <A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/"> </A> -Cui Bono?- Hitler's watery grave FROM ALLAN HALL IN BERLIN ONE of the last great mysteries of the Second World War - Hitler's final resting place - was solved yesterday. Top-secret files declassified in Russia reveal his ashes were scattered in a river in the East German hamlet of Biedernitz in 1970 on Soviet leader Leonid Breznhev's orders. Remains of Hitler's bride, Eva Braun, Third Reich propaganda chief Josef Goebbels, his wife Magda and their six children were also dumped in the river near Magdeburg The documents reveal how Russia's leaders from Stalin to Brezhnev went to extraordinary lengths to make Hitler's resting place one of the Cold War's most tightly kept secrets. After their suicides in the Nazi dictator's Berlin bunker as the Russians took the city, the bodies were twice burned and buried, and exhumed three times over the next 25 years as Soviet intelligence fought to keep their whereabouts a secret. On April 30 1945, just hours after marrying Braun, Hitler killed his dog and then his bride before shooting himself in the mouth. The entire Goebbels family killed themselves with cyanide. Five days later, soldiers from Russia's 3rd Shock Army broke into the chancellery and discovered the bodies in two shell holes where Hitler's secretary Martin Bormann had piled them. On May 6, the 3rd Shock Army had to hand over command of the bunker but secret service Smersh operatives attached to it were unwilling to give up such glittering war trophies and moved the half-burned corpses by truck to Buch near Berlin. A pathologist there wrote to KGB chief Lavrenti Beria: "In the mouth of the corpses I found glass pieces, pieces of wall and of the floor corresponding to material in the bunker. There was a strong smell of bitter almonds, the smell of cyanide which killed them. There can be no doubt about it that this is the corpse of Adolf Hitler." The 3rd Shock Army were again moved in summer 1945. Again, Smersh officers moved the bodies, this time to Rathenow, 60 miles from Berlin where they disguised new graves with "freshly planted pine trees". On January 13 1946, the corpses were dug up again to substantiate the rumour that Hitler shot himself and part of his skull was sent to Stalin in Moscow. The bodies were moved again to Magdeburg, East Germany, and buried in wooden munitions boxes. But after 24 years in 1970, foreign minister Kosygin warned Breznhev that the Red Army garrison town was about to be turned over to East Germany. "Building and earthmoving work could lead to the discovery of the graves," he wrote. "I recommend they be removed and burned under the greatest conspiratorial secrecy." On April 4 1970, three KGB operatives in gas masks exhumed the boxes. They saw bones and a pair of gold teeth, believed to have come from Magda Goebbels' mouth. The remains were doused in petrol and thoroughly burned.Pretending to go fishing, KGB men tipped the ashes into the Ehle at Biederlitz.
