NEVADA-BASED radio talk show host Art Bell is in no way connected to a
³malicious and vile e-mail² that insults Filipinos and that has been
attributed to him.

³The charge that Mr. Bell wrote the e-mail is a estatement of fact,² Bell¹s
legal counsel Gerard Fox said in a letter faxed to the INQUIRER from Los
Angeles. ³This statement is false. Even a cursory glance at Mr. Bell¹s
website or an inquiry sent to Mr. Bell or his representatives would have
established the e-mail was a fraudulent Internet posting not written by Art
Bell.²

We did not check out Bell¹s website when we received the e-mail forwarded
by
Alejandro.

When we finally did look at http://www.artbell.com/filipino.html, it turned
out Bell had printed his denial there more than two years ago.

The INQUIRER apologizes for its failure to investigate the source of the
e-mail. It regrets the error.

Fox said a person impersonating Bell wrote the e-mail in December 1998.

Meanwhile, Channel News Asia newscaster Jennifer Alejandro, who is based in
Singapore, forwarded the e-mail to the INQUIRER. It was the subject of this
column last Sunday, July 1.

The e-mail contained offensive statements about Filipinos like, ³Nothing
good has ever come from Philippines and I don¹t believe anything good ever
will,² it said. ³Your country is a disgusting and filthy place. ³That¹s all
you are. Just Filipino. Think about what that means.²

Fox wrote: ³These statements are extremely provocative and likely to incite
violence against their author. Mr. Bell is now concerned about his own
safety and the safety of his family. To publish such statements without the
most exhaustive investigation is unspeakably irresponsible on both a
journalistic and a human level.²

Filipinos from as far as Florida and Norway sent e-mail messages to the
INQUIRER, some hating Bell while others were pointing out the message was
fake.

Fox said ³Mr. Bell has received a barrage of hate-mail, including numerous
threats of violence and death. To protect his reputation and the safety of
his family, Mr. Bell has gone out of his way to inform people he was in no
way connected to this malicious and vile e-mail.²

We also got a letter from Keith Rowland, system administrator of Bell¹s web
site

www.artbell.com, who said the e-mail message did not originate from their
mail server.

³Back in December 1998, there were some racist posting made in several news
groups on the Internet by a person/s impersonating Art Bell,² Rowland
wrote.

³They have used the ID of [EMAIL PROTECTED]

³The letters that show artbel-irc.com as the website are also fake and have
not been written nor sent by Art Bell. Please review all the headers of all
messages that you have received and send your complaints to that domain¹s
sysop. The messages are originating at ucsd.edu (University of California
in San Diego) and the fake Ofrom¹ address was simply typed in.

³It is absurd to think that a public figure and professional radio host
would make such a posting,² Rowland wrote. Inquirer News Service
