T. A series of earthquakes, originating in the Hindu Kush mountains, hit Afghanistan and northwestern Pakistan yesterday. The quakes devastated the remote Afghan province of Baghlan, leaving hundreds of people dead and thousands homeless. Initial estimates of the death toll vary from 1,500 to 4,800 people.
