Report: Fresh Signs Bin Laden Is Alive NewsMax Wires Monday, Feb. 25, 2002 WASHINGTON -- U.S. officials are certain Osama bin Laden is alive and there are fresh indications he is somewhere along the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan, The New York Times reported Sunday. The information, according to one senior administration official, is "very fragile" and could be jeopardized if further details were disclosed -- and has been obtained in the past month. A senior official also says a comprehensive review of American military action in Afghanistan concludes that probably a third of the al-Qaeda core leadership has been taken out of action. So far, of the 20 to 25 terrorists in leadership positions, the administration has published the names of six reported killed. Bin Laden may be in an area of southeastern Afghanistan and adjacent Pakistani provinces that are strongholds of Islamic militancy. The newspaper said that interviews in Washington and Afghanistan suggest the search for bin Laden has been hampered by inconclusive and sometimes deliberately misleading reports from Afghans, reports that have lead to villages destroyed by bombing where survivors said there were never any al-Qaeda leaders. While American officials have said every attack has been mounted on the basis of the best intelligence available at the time, Afghan villagers have said there had been no detectable American scouting on the ground or any probe afterward to determine who was killed.
