SACRAMENTO: Highway patrol officer clocks
Davis motorcade at 94 mph
Los Angeles Times
A motorcade driving Gov. Gray Davis to Los Angeles was clocked going 94
mph by a highway patrol officer who pursued the cars for five miles until
members of the governors' security detail identified themselves, sources
said Friday.
The chase occurred last Saturday on a two-lane portion of Highway 46 in
San Luis Obispo County. Movie actor James Dean was killed in a crash on
the same stretch in 1955.
California Highway Patrol Commissioner D.O. "Spike" Helmick said he
formally reprimanded a CHP sergeant in charge of a motorcade because
traffic laws were broken. He said the motorcade was carrying a "dignitary"
but would not elaborate. (Published 12:01AM, August 9th,
