A U.S. Marine unit fresh from the war in Afghanistan has selected this western Ohio city for a massive urban training exercise that will feature low-flying helicopters, Harrier jets and all the sights and sounds of combat. Hundreds of troops from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit based at Camp Lejeune, N.C., will descend upon Dayton for the two-week training exercise in mid-September, Capt. James Jarvis said in a telephone interview from Camp Lejeune. And the training will actually take place in the city, not some remote location away from the public. “We’re going to be doing some urban training that will prepare us for deployment next year,” Jarvis said. “You’ll see low-flying helicopters. There will be explosions. There will be simulated machine-gun fire.” Jarvis said the exercises will include assaults on buildings occupied by other Marines. He said Dayton’s downtown area and suburbs offer several different scenarios for training. “It is a realistic training environment,” Jarvis said. “There are things that we can’t simulate at Camp Lejeune that Dayton will offer us. You have tall buildings. You have radio towers. We have a lot of training areas here that are rural.” The troops, who returned from a three-month tour of Afghanistan in April, also want to be prepared to operate in densely populated areas that they are unfamiliar with, Jarvis said. It was not immediately clear how the exercises would affect residents and city operations. Dayton police spokeswoman Carol Johnson would not say how police might be involved with the exercises. However, Jarvis said police will cordon off the areas where the exercises are conducted, and firefighters will ensure everything is safe. The Marines plan to give residents plenty of notice about the specifics of the exercises to avoid confusion. There will be door-to-door canvassing in areas where the exercises will be held, Jarvis said. “We want to make sure nobody is surprised,” he said. Jarvis would not specify how many of the 2,300 soldiers in the unit are coming, other than “hundreds.” Another reason for selecting Dayton for the exercise is nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, which is where the Marines will stay. No training exercises will take place at Wright-Patterson and no one from the base will take part in them, said Lt. Tracy Bunko, base spokeswoman. “We’re going to house them, we’re going to feed them and we’ll provide a runway for their aircraft,” she said. The unit has conducted similar exercises in other cities, including Atlanta, Savannah and Macon, Ga.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Mobile, Ala.; Petersburg, Va.; and New Orleans.
