Vermont Tax Revolt I
So what would happen if your local community decided not to pay
taxes to the state?
It's not a bunch of conspiracy theorists or camouflaged kooks.
In Vermont, six cities have decided to withhold local tax
payments to the state. Their objection is due to a state court
takeover of public school funding. In Vermont, the state courts
have ruled the school funding system unconstitutional and
ordered higher taxes to equalize spending across the state.
But local residents have had enough. And in Vermont, historic
home of Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys, when the local
citizens have had enough, they really mean they have had enough.
So six local communities have decided they will not send their
tax money to the state general fund to be redistributed in a
Robin Hood school funding plan.
What will the court do? What will the state do?
One town clerk predicts, "the state is just going to have to
build a bigger jail."
Civil disobedience is truly no laughing matter. But what is
truly frightening here is another case of judges acting out of
control and in total disregard for the constitutional role of
the courts. Our system of checks and balances is designed to
create government by consensus. Here in America, we pass laws by
a legislative process designed to always defer to the consent of
the governed through their votes.
When courts take over schools and tax policy they trash all that
history and set up exactly the kind of conflict that is now
brewing in Vermont, and may be brewing in Ohio. . .
