In the Gurdjieff work there is also a "thought adjuster"--
whimsically called (in Beelzebub's Tales to His Grandson) the Organ
Kundabuffer.

The stated purpose of this organ is protective, since Gurdjieff
states that if humans knew their real position and condition in the
Universe, they would not be able to bear to live. It also seems to
relate to kundalini--which Eastern tradition tells us needs to be
"awakened" in order for humans to have "full consciousness.

Waking up is the stated purpose of the Gurdjieff work, so one would
have to assume that by the time one managed to "wake up" (by removing
the buffer that closes off the kundalini), one would be sufficiently
evolved that one could bear to live with whatever knowledge awaited.

Of course, Gurdjieff also "taught" that the earth has been almost
completely destroyed four times and that many of the people now
living on earth whom we would consider "primitive" are the sad
and lost remnants of highly evolved civilizations who lived on the
earth previous to our time. This is a curious "backward" view of
history, since it regards previous civilizations as having been
vastly superior to our own. So much for "progress."

Colin Wilson's "The Outsider" is loosely based on the Gurdjieffian
teachings and is probably more accessible than Gurdjieff's own
writings, which were deliberately obfuscated by the author to make
reading and deciphering them next to impossible. Talk about elitism!
<LOL!!>

Of course, you have to hand it to Gurdjieff who, writing in the 50s,
presented the author of his book as a person traveling on a space
ship, about to visit earth while making a kind of galactic tour.
He must surely have had a sense of humor.

And yes, I've read The Morning of the Magicians. In fact, I believe I
was the one who recommended it to Brother Blue. :))
