-Caveat Lector- To the editor, FTAA and open borders. Proponents of the "Free Trade Area of the Americas"(FTAA) have carefully avoided any public discussion of how the FTAA will affect our borders.until the misnamed agreement can be pushed through congress. But Americans concerned about America's porous borders need to know that the problem will get much worse if the FTAA is approved. It will certainly surprise many security-conscious Americans to learn that some prominent leaders actually support open borders. Only two years ago, Colorado Republican Representative Tom Trancredo warned; "There are people in the [Bush] administration, and in Mexico, and in Congress, who believe that we should do away with borders entirely. Their ultimate goal is to create this hemispheric "free trade" area consolidating all of North and South America into some kind of "United States of the Americas". This goal is certainly shared by Mexico's President Vicente Fox. A couple of months before 9-11, in a July 2nd "Wall Street Journal" editorial entitled "Open NAFTA Borders? Why Not?", editor Robert L Bartley plainly stated the Wall Street Journal's shocking support for transforming the United States into a vassal of a hemispheric superstate modeled after the European Union. Bartley wrote: "Reformist Mexican President Vicente Fox raises eyebrows with his suggestion that over a decade or two NAFTA should evolve into something like the European Union, with open borders for not only goods and investment but also people. He can rest assured that there is one voice that supports his vision. to wit, this newspaper... "Indeed, during the immigration debate of 1984 we suggested an ultimate constitutional amendment: "There shall be open borders". Proponets of open borders will never give the public a chance to vote on a proposal they know would have no popular support. However,if concerned Americans do not tell Congress now to reject the FTAA, they may soon discover that our elected officials have forfeited control of our borders through this misnamed regional agreement.
