Although Huang will be pleading guilty to a one-count criminal charge, which accuses him of violating campaign finance laws between 1992-1994, Larry Klayman, chairman and general counsel at Judicial Watch, believes the whole deal between Huang and the Justice Department is a "miscarriage of justice." Judicial Watch first deposed Huang in 1996 in an attempt to discover what he knew and how he was involved in the Chinagate scandal which allegedly included selling trade mission seats to China for political contributions to the Democratic National Committee. Huang was once again deposed by Judicial Watch last month where he asserted his Fifth Amendment privilege over 1,000 times. "Huang deserves more than a slap of the wrist," insisted Klayman. "Reno, through this sweetheart deal with Huang is protecting her patron Clinton. It is outrageous." Judicial Watch believes it is all too coincidental that on the same day the Cox Report was released, the Justice Department announced its plea agreement with Huang. "It is clear that the Reno Justice Department leaked news of Huang's plea bargain to try to create the appearance of doing something," Klayman said. Klayman believes, with this latest event in the Chinagate investigation, the Clinton administration and Justice Department have shown how clever they are. With the Cox report heating things up and with Judicial Watch getting closer to the truth behind Chinagate, Clinton and Reno played the "race card." "While guilty of criminal conduct, no one ever accused the Clinton administration of not being clever," Klayman said. "Its strategy is to appear to hold Huang's coterie of Asian-Americans accountable, blame them as the sole cause of the wholesale bribery and treason in this administration and appear to burn them at the stake." "But where are the prosecutions against 'the white guys' in the White House?" asked Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch. "So far, only Asians, Indians, Indonesians, African Americans and Hispanics have been charged with minor crimes and then let off the hook. It is clear that the Clinton administration is playing a dishonest and cynical game commonly known as the race card." Fitton said now that Huang has immunity, Judicial Watch will ask the court to bring him back for some more testimony to make sure that "the white guys in the White House" are held accountable. In some ways, Fitton pointed out, Huang's immunity might actually help Judicial Watch's investigation because Huang can no longer appeal to the Fifth Amendment when giving testimony in court.
