What in the world would make you think this phenomenon is rare?

Because it's been covered on any number of urban legend sites...

THE ONLY reason I can think is that you, and most, are in a
hurry, i.e., "watching the pot for it to boil," and often stop
the oven to see if what ever it is that you are heating is
warm/hot enough yet, thus NOT ALLOWING WHAT EVER IT IS TO
 SUPERHEAT.

Actually, I rarely boil water in the microwave...and the rare times I have,
the window in the door gave me an adequate view of what was happening to the
water.

THAT is crap! I have PERSONALLY had this happen MANY TIMES!

It usually occurs when I inadvertently super heat black coffee or
bouillon. I pull it out and add something to it, i.e., sugar,
milk, pepper, etc., AND WOOOSH!!

What in the world would make you think this phenomenon is rare?
THE ONLY reason I can think is that you, and most, are in a
hurry, i.e., "watching the pot for it to boil," and often stop
the oven to see if what ever it is that you are heating is
warm/hot enough yet, thus NOT ALLOWING WHAT EVER IT IS TO
SUPERHEAT.

If you set the timer for too long (i.e., longer than needed to
heat or JUST bring to a boil) and the liquid is free of
impurities to allow bubble formation for boiling, I assure you
that the phenomena IS NOT RARE!!
