Ta'anis 027: The returning Mishmaros

The gemara only mentions the punishment for the former chief mishmar not
returning to Israel with Ezra. What about the other 19?

Dear Judah,
Hello there and thanks for your question. You raise a very interesting point. I
would assume that any other Mishmar which would return to Eretz Yisrael would
face a similar punishment; they would be pushed to the back of the list. The
reason why Yehoyariv is singled out is probably since they were the first
mishmar they were the most prominent, but nonetheless they must also suffer the
consequences. This is why the Gemora specifies that even Yehoyariv will be
demoted.
