General: Fasting on Rosh Chodesh Adar

David Goldstein asked:

I am getting married on Rosh Chodesh Adar and would like to know where I find
and if you can provide me with a reason for not fasting on Rosh Chodesh as a
chatan.

David Goldstein, Forest Hills, USA

The Kollel replies*:

All the information about a Chasan fasting on the day of his Chupah is
contained in two places in Shulchan Aruch: Even ha'Ezer 61:1 and Orach Chaim
573:1.

If you were getting married on Rosh Chodesh Nisan there might be some question
about what to do, but on other Roshei Chodesh it is straightforward that you
don't fast (TAZ 573:1). The reason is that Rosh Chodesh is one of those days
that one should not fast according to the Gemara (and not just according to
Minhag - as with the other days of Chodesh Nisan, see Magen Avraham 573:1).

However, even though you won't be fasting you should limit your eating and
drinking to that which is necessary (Beis Shmuel 61:6), you should avoid
alcoholic beverages (Chachmas Adam 129:2), and you should say Viduy as you
would if you were fasting (heard from Rav Moshe Sternbuch).

Mazal Tov,
Yonasan Sigler
