Regarding your comments on the daf (insights 26b, on Bitachon) -
there are other examples of Avraham's behaviour which support the
hishtadlus/bitachon combination - after all, he did "chofer be'erot"
for his flocks; and even in the maaseh the gemara brings, Rabah bar
bar Chana started out carrying his pack - that certainly seems like
hishtadlus, he took the first steps, and HKBH did the rest - but he
had to take those first steps...

The Kollel replies:
That's a good point. Perhaps the Gaon is only saying that it is
permitted to leave everything to Hashem, not that it is required.
(Since it is permitted to do so, it is obviously a Midas Chasidus to
choose that path.)
In addition, he may only be proscribing Hishtadlus that involves
soliciting the help of other people (such as the Arab traveler).
When it came to such matters, Avraham indeed said, "Im mi'Chut Ad
Sroch Na'al (Bereishis 14:23).
