2017-04-18 Thread Nisha Thompson
Hi All,

ODC is a few days away. The Agenda is shaping up. You can see it here:

http://odc.datameet.org/odcblr2017#odc_day_1

We are excited because we will be starting day 1 off with a public health
role playing game and then going into the talks. Which feathers talks from
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Open Budgets, and OpenCHS. We
aren't finished scheduling all the talks so stay tuned for the rest of the
schedule.

We would like to thank Mapbox India for sponsoring Happy Hour at the end of
day 1!

Day 2 will feature a short workshop on Privacy and Security, time for a
working group on the National Statistics standards and statistical policy
and a movie screening on Manual Scavenging. As well as any other ideas or
projects that people want to work on.

PLEASE REGISTER.

We had sold out once already and were able to open up more seats but we are
running out. We will only be counting registrations from Instamojo if you
signed up on Facebook or Meetup it won't be counted.

https://www.instamojo.com/datameet/open-datacamp-bangalore-2017/

See you then!

Nisha

[datameet] Hindustan Times is looking to hire a data journalist to join its News Apps team

2017-04-18 Thread Harry Stevens
Hey guys,

We're looking to hire someone to join our team at Hindustan Times. If you
love making cool stuff on the Internet about current events, you should
apply. Full job description below:

- Harry

The Hindustan Times seeks a data journalist to join its award-winning News
Apps team at HT's global headquarters in New Delhi, India, at the earliest
possible date. Applicants should be highly motivated and passionate about
telling stories in compelling ways, particularly on digital platforms.

*Desired skills/experience:*

   - Journalism: Experience working as a professional reporter, publishing
stories regularly, and juggling daily reporting with long-term feature and
   enterprise work.
   - Data gathering: Web scraping, public records requests, Tabula, etc.
   - Data analysis: Excel, OpenRefine, R, knowledge of statistics, etc.
   - Data visualization: Creating charts and maps, preferably interactive
ones with Javascript and related libraries like D3.js and TopoJSON, but
also static ones with tools like Adobe Illustrator, ai2html and QGIS.
   - Web development and design: HTML, CSS, Javascript and related
   libraries like jQuery.

It is not necessary that you can tick all five of these boxes, but you
should be proficient in at least two of these fields and have a strong
desire to learn the rest. We improve with every project, and we're always
helping each other get better. It's a lot of fun.

We are accepting applications on a rolling basis. Interested applicants
should send a cover letter, resume/CV and links to two of your stories or
projects — not necessarily published — to harry.stev...@hindustantimes.com.
