Merging with an older bug report where this issue was primarily
discussed. I tried Jeff Epler's patch at the time but seem to remember
there were problems with it, so it ought to be checked

quotes to make it find $dir.
The rest of it certainly does look strange, but anyway it works if you just
add the quotes. Maybe another time
