This is very useful, thanks. So the 3c59x module is getting loaded and eth0 is registered. That's for sure. But it doesn't seem to work. Could you cat /proc/bus/pci/devices, save the output of that to a floppy, and attach that? It could be your NIC is simply busted. The driver is convinced you don't have anything plugged in to the card. Certainly it could be a driver mismatch, so /proc/bus/pci/devices will tell us for sure.
