Bug#684128: false advertising

(FTR, that's near to be insulting in my standards…)

I know what giga- and gibi-bytes are, but I still don't care right now; we are
actually trying to get Wheezy out and there are other priorities (such as 572
Release-Critical bugs) than this type of problem.

That said, I don't think anyone is trying to avoid a proper resolution of this
bug. So the people who care mostly (and know what a gibibyte is) should start
working on patches if they really want to get this fixed; this work will not
come magically out of the blue.

Cheers,

Absolutely agreed. I wouldn't hope to see this fixed for Wheezy - even just
changing the wording of the text requires an enormous amount of work at this
stage - it's just frustrating to see it apparently being dismissed out of
hand as not being a problem.

Thanks,

Bug#684216: Package: installation-reports

2012-08-08 Thread Christian PERRIER
Quoting Heinz-Werner Drechsel (hwdrech...@t-online.de):

 1. This error exists since debian wheezy DI A1...: when installer tries
to detect network hardware, it hangs without asking after a short time
for an extern driver or firmware. I have an onboard RTL 8168e-2. Without
an functionning network therefore I couldn't also install tasks.

This seems to be bug #681656. The hypothesis has been made it could be
a problem in mountmedia, where it attempts to mount en extended
partition.

If you can reproduce this, can you switch to another console (Alt-F2)
and try checking if there is a hanged moun process ('ps w|grep
mount' should tell).

If so, can you try the daily built *netboot* images from
http://d-i.debian.org/daily-images/

 2. With an (new) Nvidia graphics card GTX 560 SE the grapical desktop
after installation doesn't start (with built-in nouveau driver), it
hangs! Before, while booting, syslog shows an error like unknown
I2C-Ports on the graphic card. I always have first to install an older
graphics card and after suceeded start of the desktop install the actual
generic Nvidia driver and after this reinstall my new GTX 560 SE.

Leaving it up to X wizards. This is likely a bug in the X driver or in
the kernel. They should know..:-)

Please have a look at IEC 60027-2 (or Wikipedia) to make clear that
the wording is absolutely correct. So if anybody wants to change
the units of measurement, a change to the wording _and_ the code

I don't think anyone has suggested that the wording is wrong, just not what

that's irrelevant.)

To investigate the issue, X maintainers need the full X.org log

Subject: Wheezy nightly build (netinst / businesscard) can't find disk drive on
Hyper-V VMs
From: Oskar Senft debian(at)senft-net(dot)com
Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2012 18:27:22 +0200
Message-id: 4fe0a86a.8020...@senft-net.com

Hi

I just tried to use the nightly build of netinst and businesscard of
Wheezy on a virtual machine running on Hyper-V.

The problem is that the the driver for the (virtual) hard disks is not
loaded. As far as I can tell this is due to the fix for bug #661318,
which now causes the ata_piix to no longer load on Hyper-V because the
hv_storvsc should be used instead.

However, the Hyper-V kernel modules (hv_storvsc et al) are missing in
the current netinst and businesscard installer image for AMD64 - I did
not check on x86 or any other installer type.

From what I can tell the following kernel module should be part of the

installer to support installation on Hyper-V virtual machines:
/lib/modules/3.2.0-2-amd64/kernel/drivers/net/hyperv/hv_netvsc.ko
/lib/modules/3.2.0-2-amd64/kernel/drivers/scsi/hv_storvsc.ko
/lib/modules/3.2.0-2-amd64/kernel/drivers/hv
/lib/modules/3.2.0-2-amd64/kernel/drivers/hv/hv_vmbus.ko
/lib/modules/3.2.0-2-amd64/kernel/drivers/hv/hv_utils.ko

I'd be happy to raise a bug on this, but I wanted to check first if this
is a know problem. Google and the debian-boot archives don't know
anything about it.

What's the correct procedure to raise bugs on the installer?

Thanks
Oskar.

Bug#684293: installation-reports: Installer hangs at iso-scan step while mounting an extended partition

2012-08-08 Thread M H
Package: installation-reports
Severity: important

The Wheezy hd-media installer (daily from 08-08) hangs at the

step Searching drives for an installer ISO image,
while mounting the extended partition /dev/sda4.
This partition should never be mounted.

The ouptut of ps w is given below:

1291 root  5728 S    udpkg --configure --force-configure iso-scan
 1292 root  3980 S    {iso-scan.postin} /bin/sh /var/lib/dpkg/info/iso-

 1960 root  3980 R    mount -t auto -o ro /dev/sda4 /hd-media
 1969 root  3980 R    ps w

As a workaround the process 1291 can be killed to continue with the
installation.
The hang is caused by the script iso-scan.postinst (package: iso-scan), where
the extended partition is not omitted from the device list.
This bug has the same cause as the mountmedia bug #683849.

The following untested patch should solve this issue:

I could continue with the installation after adding exit 0 at the

On the same machine the Squeeze mdadm command

exits  successfully:

Bug#684293: root cause of mount hang in installer [kernel bug]

2012-08-08 Thread M H
After some googling I found out that the root cause of the recent mount
problems with extended partitions (maybe also mounting disks like sda)
are related to the infinite loop kernel bug in __getblk_slow.

(see the explanation: https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/1189121/)
The affected debian kernels should get fixed with the patch offered in kernel
3.2.24 (http://lwn.net/Articles/508225/).

 http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/apas02.html#howto-getting-images-usb

First, this is not the official doc, but is an internal site used to
track translation status. It looks considerably out of date to me,
dating back to before the release of Squeeze.

Ah. Well, it's the first manual I could find. :)

Second, that points me at a page that doesn't look anything like the
steps you described in your email. Maybe you were thinking of this one?

 http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/ch04s03.html.en

In any case, whichever version of the instructions you were following,
 this is incorrect:

  2. uncompress the .img.gz file and dd it into a USB key:

 gunzip debian-700alpha1-i386-boot.img.gz
 sudo dd if=debian-700alpha1-i386-boot.img of=/dev/sdb1

If your intention was to use a pre-partitioned key, see the flexible
way. But this looks like you were trying the easy way which says:

 # zcat boot.img.gz /dev/sdX

Earlier on the same page (whether the one I cited above, or the
out-of-date doc you linked to) it explains this is the whole drive, not
 a partition.

Oops! Sorry, my mistake!

I will try the method described here as a workaround:

 http://joeyh.name/blog/entry/Debian_USB_install_from_hybrid_iso/

If it works, I suggest the documentation be updated to advise users to
use the .isos instead of the hd-media files.

It already is. See the documentation for the stable release I linked to
above, section 4.3.1. Preparing a USB stick using a hybrid CD or DVD
image. Naturally, the wheezy doc, when released, will include this
 recommendation as well.

Alright! It would be useful to make that documentation more clearly
available, because as things stand people digging for wheezy install
docs find the alioth page instead.

But maybe that's just me...

I think this bug can be closed if you are satisfied with the
documentation.

Thanks, I created a patch to fix this in the installation-guide (see
  attachment).

 Applied, thanks.

as we are in the phase of getting translations in sync with
English, the manual should probably considered frozen?
This has unfortunately not been propagated before though.
Can the last changes be reverted?
