I also found out yesterday that the ifconfig from net-tools version 6.1-6 is broken on my machine. The last combination of packages to work for me is net-tools 6.1-4 and freebsd-hackedutils 5.2.1-32. With the latest packages I get this behaviour: $ ifconfig -a em0:
