problem directly, but the xrandr program did!
(I didn't try xrandr before upgrading, so the upgrade may not have
actually been required).
Anyhow I'm quite happy with the result.

It fixes the problem mentioned in the original report and removes the
use of the GCC-specific minimum and maximum operators which have since
been removed from GCC.
