I see this problem mostly from mutt as vim is my editor. To reproduce
try this.
1. Start screen.
2. Start mutt.
3. Forcefully disconnect session (e.g. kill xterm.).
4. Log in again and reattach screen, usually with -dr.
5. Now try to use vim via mutt again. Vim will hang.
