it was configured with a wrong UUID in /etc/fstab.
Since I've never modified the file, I guess it could be an installer bug

I had a copy of the adwaita theme in the .themes folder under my home
directory.
Cancelling that the problem disappeared (it must have been fixed in the
meantime in the gnome-themes-standard package)

By putting usb_modeswitch in verbose mode (flag EnableLogging in
/etc/usb_modeswitch.conf), I was able to see that, when plugging the key
