When playing banshee, it operates as expected for a number of tracks,
then just stops playing. The application is no longer visable from X

Can't provide much more info, as I removed the program.
Having read the response I can confirm I don't have the http_proxy variable set
and my /etc/apt/apt.conf is vanilla.
I'm happy to reinstall the apt-list program if it helps track down the error.
