I installed qdirstat and launched it. It gave me a GTK(3?) prompt for
choosing the directory I wish to scan. After choosing the directory
I eventually fixed my issue by installing package 'freetype2-demos'.

I confirm this issue. Typing in the editor causes octave to exit "with
signal 11." I was able to stop it from crashing by disabling one or more
text autocompletion features in preferences.
Menu: Edit -> Preferences... -> Editor -> Autocompletion
I just unchecked everything in that section,

I think my problem is related. I initially thought the problem was with
qjackctl specifically, but I realized that many qt5 applications would
not start that depended on libqt5gui5, such as virtualbox.

I did install KiCad recently, and one of the suggested packages was
