At this point I can think of only three possible reasons of the effect:

xterm, uxterm and rxvt all can't display hyphens and curved quotes (both
single and double). The xterms show the character n in place of hyphens
and these quotes, whereas rxvt shows รข??. Urxvt works correctly.

I found in the Debian forums that you can also use GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX in
/etc/default/grub. If use that instead of gfxpayload=keep the virtual
consoles work perfectly. So maybe this is the proper way to set this

I don't even have a clue why but the bug is here again. Following is the
aptitude log. After the major upgrade you see at the beginning of the log I
put set gfxpayload=keep into /etc/grub.d/00_header, did grub-update and
the bug was gone. Somewhere during the period of this log the bug must have

uninstalled all alsa
The bug has been fixed, it seems to me that it was a problem with grub, not
nvidia-glx, since the trigger of the bug was the grub option
gfxpayload=keep.
