the directory name is printed after the error message. So if no
directory is found after this error, it's because TopDir is not

In fact there a problem with debconf.
If you run dpkg-reconfigure backuppc, you'll see that the apache2
option is never checked, so the configuration is not migrated to
apache 2.4
Is it a debconf problem which does not remember older values??

linked, while the included Expat copy is mostly a fallback for systems

- directories in /etc should have the same name as the package
so /etc/backuppc is used and not /etc/BackupPC.

The main difference between the 2 boxes may be the locale:
dell notebook:

This happens also when I'm logged as root.
