Te same problem here with stock lenny. The hickup seems to be at
/etc/network/if-up.d/mountnfs as it sources /etc/init.d/nfs-common, but
is not
able to start statd. The error message is something like already
running, but it certainly isn't.

Yes, that works. Why not then just require 2.6.25 and default to aufs to
close the bug altogether?
