I restored several files to a folder after opening Nautilus but the
contents of the folder were blank according to Nautilus although I could
see the files using a terminal. (I used
If you right click on the file and choose Properties instead of Open
With you can then use the Open With tab in the Properties box. Using
that does work on my system whereas the other 2 ways of trying to change
the preferred application don't.

Check for new messages at startup is ticked for most of my email accounts but
it doesn't do it. I have to click Get Mail. Only a minor annoyance but some
people may not initially realise that it isn't doing it, so it ought to be
fixed
I discovered why this happened. The files I was editing were C programs with
a header line as follows:
/* -*- Mode: C; indent-tabs-mode: t; c-basic-offset: 8; tab-width: 8 -*- */
No doubt this will be immediately familiar to you, it isn't to me. There's
no reference I can see in the help file to

I chose a tab setting preference of 2 instead of the default 8. This works for
documents currently loaded in gedit, but if I subsequently load a document with
tabs in, the tab setting is back at 8 (for that file only), I have to then go
