working I was in 2.6.18. Upgrading to 2.6.22 didn't solve anything.

I've just got the same problem just one day before having to do my
presentation...
Switching back to gs-esp 7.07.1-9 makes it work again.

configurations. But I run kbiff to check an IMAP mailbox and a POP

Actually I've just realized there is still a problem:
At first I didn't use your patched package. instead I compiled the
kernel using
kernel-source 2.4.27-6 and your patch and the .config from
kernel-headers 2.4.27-6.
