Quick search around the web suggested KDE "global scale" under display

Recent updates to icedove, it's themes or GNOME integration are causing
me a similar problem that I've just started investigating. Symptom is
general hanging of the application, the content of the main window doesn't
redraw, but

I purged icedove.
Installed the old version from pool using dpkg, ran old icedove once.
Purged the old version.
Installed the new.
Ran icedove, it updated a load of plugins for me correctly this time.

Despite discussions with upstream, which suggested this issue might have
