the DisplaySize
value of the xorg.conf file, or information from the screen, is to
specify the arguments in gdm.conf but to leave out -dpi. I think this
should be clearly documented, preferably in the gdm.conf file itself
since it doesn't even contain a 0= line by default.

The path according to /etc/X11/Xservers is /usr/bin/X. According to the debconf
information, the name of the daemon is
/usr/bin/X11/xdm. None of these locations exist. Without changing these, xdm
can't be started with /etc/init.d/xdm
for additional
information.
/usr/X11R6/bin/xinit: connection to X server lost.

whatever is wrong is in gdm. I recursively grepped /etc/gdm for 96 but found
nothing, so I have no idea what to do about it. Anyway, it seems the bug should
belong to gdm.

The X server used to query the monitor for it's physical dimensions, and
everything was just fine. Now it seems that DPI is somehow set to 96,
and the dimensions are modified to fit that, which makes both the DPI
and the dimensions

The problem seems to be related to dash - everything is ok when
newbiedoc is explicitly started with bash.
I'm not capable of telling if it is a problem in dash or in newbiedoc.

When the BROWSER environment equals sensible-browser and
sensible-browser is called, sensible browser goes into an endless
recursion. Of course, BROWSER should never = sensible-browser, but it
wouldn't hurt if sensible-browser could handle
