I can confirm that this patch https://sources.debian.org/patches/picom/10.2-2/2-fix-compositor-check.patch/ will cause picom to not start at the beginning. I autostart picom by add it to my ~/.xsessionrc file, after upgrading to 10.2-2, it complains "Pre-render preparation has failed, exiting..." and exit. Downgrading to 10.2-1 or starting manually after the desktop is done will be okay.
