It started on 2007-01-07, and last occurred at 2007-01-11 00:28:02.
It wasn't associated with a configuration change, as I hadn't
changed /etc/denyhosts.conf since Dec 16:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 20905 2006-12-16 21:16 /etc/denyhosts.conf

The package installation log is as follows (from /var/log/dpkg.log):
2006-12-15 22:36:56 status half-installed denyhosts 2.5-4
2006-12-15 22:36:56 status half-installed denyhosts 2.5-4
2006-12-15 22:36:57 status unpacked denyhosts 2.6-1
2006-12-15 22:36:57 status unpacked denyhosts 2.6-1
2006-12-15 22:37:13 status unpacked denyhosts 2.6-1
2006-12-15 22:37:13 status unpacked denyhosts 2.6-1
2006-12-15 22:37:13 status unpacked denyhosts 2.6-1
2006-12-16 21:13:56 status unpacked denyhosts 2.6-1
2006-12-16 21:14:55 conffile /etc/denyhosts.conf install
2006-12-16 21:14:55 status unpacked denyhosts 2.6-1
2006-12-16 21:14:55 status half-configured denyhosts 2.6-1
2006-12-16 21:15:08 status installed denyhosts 2.6-1

Around the time the problem stopped, I was fiddling
with spamassassin configuration, and had changed /etc/passwd,
perhaps doing something with the "nobody" user.
(at 2007-01-11 00:04).

It's odd. My best guess is that the central server sent
down some odd text, which perhaps didn't match a regex?
