I've installed a brand new HDD (Fujitsu MHV2120AH) on my laptop and it
cycles every 5-9 seconds.
Bug #448710 fixing method won't work on my system.

If you manually do
hdparm -B 254 /dev/hda
or
Hi Fran,
I guess your workarounds did interfere with the fix built into
acpi-support. If it works now, great! If it ever stops working again,
let me know. :-)
