I had the same problem on an older machine. I was able to work around it by
adding the
"NVreg_UseVBios=0" option to /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-kernel-common.conf and
rebooting.

PS: I do already have installed 280.13.really.275.36-1~bpo60+1 in
squeeze-backports though, and the problem remains. Blank screen when I
switch to the console. In the mean time I also upgraded my graphics
card, it is now an nVidia GeForce 6600 GT, so apparently its not
model-specific.
