I don't know any more steps for fixing right now :-(
I did some more experiments and I think that the bug should be reassigned to
the kernel.

On my system, the bug is kicking and !screaming.
Unfortunately, I did not note when it broke, .
Attached are the outputs of alsa-info.sh from a Squeeze system where it still
works and the current
To order the builtin and HDMI sound, I have
# grep -v \# /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base-local.conf
options snd cards_limit=2
options snd-intel8x0 index=0
options snd-hda-intel index=1
Could you please comment thos three option lines and retry?
Does not work:

Done.

One thing I was wondering about: when I prepared my initial mail, I diffed the
good/bad alsa-info.sh outputs, and the line 'inside_vm : Y' under
'Loaded sound module options' of snd_intel8x0 looked suspicious to me.
I am definitely not

The fix turned out to be to set probe_mask=1 for snd-hda-intel in
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. That then causes both the ALC850 and the HDMI
port to be found.
Could you please post the output of
$ lsmod | grep snd
