Aha, splendid. This works fine. I tried tinkering with the approx@
template service but didn't have a clue what I was doing and got
nowhere. I didn't think to start the approx.socket. Silly me. Thanks

It looks like openbsd-inetd is not needed and the systemd support does
work, but it's not being enabled and started by default. I think all
that's required is:
# systemctl enable approx.socket
# systemctl start approx.socket
I don't know why that isn't done automatically, since I don't
