traditional text-files are used. So that a hard required dependency
on the gconf or gnome-settings daemon never should be necessary.

Actually, this is the way it has always been, at least since 2006. Both
in openjdk-7 and, as a subset, in openjdk-6. That's why those
desktop with its clutter of hilarious
dependendies (apache2, 3 spidermonkey versions, two settings daemons, 3
settings mechanisms etc. pp.)

command should return (hd0,3) instead of (hd0,4). Grub counts from 0, the dev
system from 1, so /dev/hda1 translates to (hd0,0) etc.
