Bug#701109: PDF preview in Iceweasel 19 is partly unreadable

2013-02-28 Thread Vincent Lefevre
Control: retitle -1 iceweasel: pdf.js (PDF preview) should render pages
correctly even when browser.display.use_document_fonts=0
Control: forwarded -1 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=738627

After doing some tests with Iceweasel and Firefox nightly 22.0a1
(2013-02-27), I'm precisely seeing the above bug.

Note: the browser.display.use_document_fonts preference is also
controlled by the UI Preferences - Content - Fonts Colors
  - Advanced... - Allow pagesto choose their fonts, instead
  of my selection above

That said, I compared the rendering of a couple of simple text PDFs
using the built-in viewer in Iceweasel 19 and evince, and I have to
agree that the quality of typography is supbar in Iceweasel. Is this
a Debian (or GNU/Linux) specific problem?

No, according to user comments on

http://www.reddit.com/r/programming/comments/18ugcr/exciting_stuff_firefox_19s_builtin_pdf_viewer/

font problems (e.g. missing characters) occur on Windows and Mac
machines as well.

And there are many font-related bugs reported upstream:
