I suspect you had file system problems and kmail configs got eaten in the process ( ~/.kde/share/config/kmail* ). There might even be some leftovers with odd names ~/.kde/share/config/kmailrc*.new etc. Try recovering from them. The mail should still be there in ~/Mail or somewhere in
