I got the latest kernel vmlinuz-2.6.30-2-versatile
I tried running it over QEMU. But I keep getting an error while partitioning
my disk. The partition manager fails to partition my disk. Why does this
happen?

I changed the root partition to ext2 and it worked.

Oh no!
It installed but when I rebooted the QEMU instance, i got the following
error : Kernel panic: - not syncing: VFS Unable to mount root fs on unknown
block. :(
I tried using an older kernel as suggested by

Often that comes from not having kernel modules
