Bug#860488: tzdata: date stopped showing timezone abbreviation after 2016j-0+deb8u1 upgraded to 2017a and 2017b

2017-04-17 Thread Joao S Veiga
Package: tzdata
Version: 2017b-0+deb8u1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

After upgrading tzdata from 2016j-0+deb8u1 to 2017a-0+deb8u1 the timezone
abbreviation for the local time stopped showing on date and on our email
timestamps. Still happening on 2017b-0+deb8u1

Until version 2016j-0+deb8u1, the timezone abbreviation (for example BRT, BRST)
was shown. After the upgrade, the abbreviation was replaced by the time offset
(-03, -02)

Downgrading the tzdata package alone reverts to the working situation:

root@gronholm:~# date
Mon Apr 17 15:23:30 -03 2017
root@gronholm:~# date +%Z
-03
root@gronholm:~# apt-get install tzdata=2016j-0+deb8u1
