There's already a bug report in the KDE tracker:

A fix is also posted there and shall be shipped with KDE 5.4.

Until then it'd be nice to have this fix in KDE itself, but I can compile it
Hi Dennis,
I tried your workaround, but, sadly it doesn't work :(.
Also, it seems I'm not the only one annoyed by this problem [1] :).

SDDM is the issue.
I suggest using KDM to fix the problem.
I used Synaptic and installed KDM and once installed you will get a
popup and you can select it as the Default DM.
REBOOT.
GAMES ARE FIXED.
Next do a purge on SDDM.
Everything works beautifully now. The lock screen is the same.

Hello,
i am on debian-sid and my last update with breeze on hold was eight days ago.
Today i did a apt-get upgrade, still with breeze on hold. After the upgrade
kwin crashes so i set the breeze packages to unhold and did an upgrade again.
After this, i could login, kwin didn't crash anymore,
I'm having the same behavior but do not know the reason.
Thanks,

KDM doesn't require libsystemd0 and is mature even if it is 20 years
old.
I haven't tried a distro yet be it Debian,

That is likely the cause. I wouldn't be surprised if it would work if you also
had the testing repos in your /etc/apt/sources.list

have unstable sources in your /etc/apt/sources.list.
